You also know about how Lt. Cmdr. John McCain, USN, and his daddy the admiral decided it was OK to lob around the flight deck of a United States Navy aircraft carrier with WW2-vintage 1,000-pound bombs. One of the tired old things gave way and led to the deaths of 134 sailors and marines.

The naval pilot quickly pulled himself from the cockpit, scrambled down the nose and leaped through the flames. Sitting in a Skyhawk on the port side aft, Lt.-Cmdr. I believe they were killed instantly. I saw one man covered with flames. I watched him making efforts to beat out the flames on his body."
