It’s time to stop treating “Liberal” like a dirty word.
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 02:20 PM by Cyrano
We now call ourselves “progressives,” but the Limbaughs of the world still sneer at us and call us Liberals. It’s time for us to reclaim that title and be proud of it.

If only we could frame issues like the Republicans can. I was a liberal before St. Ronnie and his Huns turned that word into phrases like “Northeastern-establishment, elite, wine-sipping, quiche-eating, flag-burning, bed-wetting, commie, New York, liberal faggots.”

Who would have thought that knuckle draggers could string together that many words?

So now that Reagan’s ideological descendants have disgraced themselves, it’s past time for us to reclaim the heritage of FDR, JFK and the best ethical standards of the Democratic Party.

If a liberal is the opposite of a conservative, let’s look at what the term “conservative” has come to mean. Unjustified wars, torture, lies, no pity, no decency, war criminals who are screwing veterans, the poor, the homeless, the hungry, the unemployed, the uninsured, children, unwed mothers, blacks, immigrants, every form of “the other,” and everyone else except me, me, me. It would seem that to conservatives, greed, cruelty and inhumanity are “good.”

So let’s stop ducking the names they call us, and let’s start highlighting what they stand for and the vicious cancer of their so-called ideas.

On edit: Think about it. If you've been around for the past few decades, have you ducked being called a "liberal?"

1. I'm a proud liberal
and anyone who knows me, knows that. Its a badge of honor to be denigrated by the likes of a punkass cowardly chickenhawk warmonger drug addict who oozes "conservative" values.

in most of the rest of the world, liberal = far right libertarian. I think we ought to take back socialist or socialist democrat.

3. I'd like to see an ad campaign like the Dewar's campaign....
Show a liberal, give the profile, the way Dewar's did.

4. I'm a liberal. No big deal.
I'm not particularly proud of being right all the time. It's easy.

5. A great big k&r...
I am not only proud to be liberal but, I am proud to be a bleeding heart liberal. To me the word liberal invokes a great sense of possibility, whereas the word conservative leaves no room for change. I am most proud of my liberalism and I won't hesitate to inform people of that.

6. A "bleeding heart liberal." Ahh, how the thugs love that phrase.
Well, let's see what it means. The closest I can come up is the word compassion. Jesus Christ, what an evil friggin word to a conservative. Actually caring about other human beings on this planet? What a perverted, sick, outlook.

But we all know it is not the "bleeding heart liberals" who are the perverts. We despise the crimes that have been committed over the past seven years. And we live in dread of what can still be done in the one year by the sociopaths who are still in power.

As a devout agnostic, I don't believe in a hell. But there are times like this that I sure wish I could. My imagination is too limited to comprehend anyplace worse for those who have brought the entire civilized world to the depths of despair.

7. I have never surrendered and called myself a 'progressive.' I'm a liberal and glad of it.
It's idiotic to regard it as an epithet, imho, and those who do betray their own moral and intellectual corruption.
