Mellencamp Asks McCain to Stop Using Tunes
At some recent John McCain campaign rallies, John Mellencamp’s “Our Country” and “Pink Houses” have been booming out over the speakers. Uplifting heartland rock must have seemed like a smart pick, but there’s just one problem: Mellencamp is an ardent Democrat. And, until recently, he supported John Edwards – who had been playing “Our Country” and “Small Town” at his rallies. Mellencamp hasn’t yet made a public response, but his reps are quietly reaching out to McCain and asking him to stop playing his tunes. (McCain’s press office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

Not to mention that the far-right types whose votes McCain is seeking won’t love the mildly progressive lyrics to “Our Country,” which call on the government to “help the poor and common man” and suggest that “there’s room enough here for science to live/ And there’s room enough here for religion to forgive.” And does McCain really want to associate himself with those “Pink Houses” lines about the “simple man” paying for the “the thrills, the bills and the pills that kill”?

1. Long standing tradition in the GOP. Rail against the entertainment industry, then rip em off.
Remember Reagan and "Born in the USA"?

opening his stupid show with a snippet of "The Way it is".

Yeah, song about civil rights and helping poor people- that's really you guys, Sean. :eyes:

Fact is, though, right-wing "rock and roll" pretty much sucks Nugent Balls. So what're they going to do?

17. ASCAP won't collect on campaign rally music
but Mellencamp could legally force him to stop.

7. it's always funny
when musicians ask right wingers to stop using their music when campaigning and in relation to commercials or websites I think it's fair but if I buy a CD I expect to be able to play it at my party regardless of whether the artist agrees with my politics or those of my guests

16. Just like "Born in the USA" in the 1984 election...
used by the Reagan campaign. Springsteen complained.

Also bizarre because obviously they didn't understand the lyrics, or decided these were irrelevant.

Born down in a dead man's town
the first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You get like a dog who's been beat too much
You spend half your life just covering up
Born in the USA...

and it goes on like that, including a condemnation of the Vietnam war and the fate of the veterans on returning.

Not exactly "Morning in America," is it now?

18. Remember Lieberman playing The Stones' Start Me Up in 2006?
I think Matt Taibi wrote about it in RS, and some of the old lady supporters at the rally didn't even know that the song was about getting erections that won't go down.

Not only Repugs, but also "Independants" misuse songs too.:D
