New legislation will ban novelty lighters

Local woman bought lighter thinking it was a toy

LANSING (WJRT) -- (02/04/08)--A Mid-Michigan woman's concern over the dangers of novelty lighters has sparked action in Lansing. Monday, a state senator said she'll introduce legislation to ban their sale in Michigan.

The legislation comes after an ABC12 report involving a Beaverton woman. Laura Fowler called us last month after she bought a novelty lighter thinking it was a toy. Monday, Lansing called on her.

"I'm amazed at all these lighters," Fowler said. "It's just crazy."

Fowler is talking about novelty lighters that look like toys. In January, we introduced you to her.

She was upset after finding out a Dalmatian lighter bought for her daughter from a Beaverton dollar store was not a toy.

It was actually a novelty lighter. State Sen. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Lansing) saw the story on abc12.com.
