For folks who love bans.......Purses Banned
Purses Banned
Rockingham County

Distractions in the classroom have led one valley middle school to ban all bags, even purses, from classrooms. Some parents say this is a bad idea, because young women need to be able to carry their feminine hygiene products.

Wilbur Pence Middle School teacher Stacie Holzberger says that bags and purses carrying electronic toys and phones were getting in the way of learning.

"Teachers were having a problem getting to students, to help with their learning. The pocketbooks were in the way. The bookbags were cluttering up to floor, and we weren't able to get to students," says Holzberger.

So all bags were banned, even smaller purses. That's when mother Jennifer Alcombright says the school went too far. She says girls need to be able to carry around their feminine products.

"If the girls who are texting on their cellphones are still violating that rule, they need to be reprimanded for that. They're violating a rule, but for the girls who are using it for the proper reason, aren't breaking any rules, and they shouldn't be punished," says Alcombright.

2. School rules become idiotic when a few students make a problem
and lazy management kicks in with a total overkill ban on a mundane everyday item. For example, a couple of girls wearing thong underwear and showing it off leads to a ban on underpants.

3. Schools would NEVER need backpacks, purses, metal detectors IF
they had coat-check locker-roomy places at each entrance.

Each classroom had its own supply of books on each desk and paper/pens/pencils for class

girls' bathrooms with cheap and WORKING dispensers for the girly stuff..

All that kids would need is a notebook/folder for the papers they accrue during any day.. they could surely carry any money they needed in a pocket...

Kids would have a duplicate set of books at home for homework..

No cell phones/blackberries/texty things/gameboys

For 6 hours a day, surely kids could be "out of touch".. Most of us managed just fine..

4. Dresses often don't have pockets
and many middle-school girls feel embarrassed to use the machines. Also unless you are going to stock multiple kinds of 'girly stuff' it's awkward. It's not all the same.

The whole school situation is overrated anyway. Our kids would be better educated in the old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse in my opinion.

5. Notebooks these days have pockets.. perhaps that would work
I'm with you opn the one-room thing :)

Schools are pretty weird these days.. My kids may have been the last "carefree bunch" to go through school and it was much more restrictive than MY fantastic school experiences.. I feel sad for kids going to school now..
