Raleigh only has 109 days of water left

http://www.atlantawatershortage.com/

Feb. 1
As reported by Water Crunch, it appears that Raleigh, North Carolina is down to about 108 days worth of water (with no future rainfall factored in).

While I’m quite concerned about this, I wonder how accurate the number is. As we’ve seen before, those kinds of estimates can vary wildly from source to source. If nothing else, it appears they have about 87 days worth of water left after the “regular supply” runs out, bringing their total to about 195 days. Even with low rainfall totals, that should stretch out a few months beyond that. Still, it’s not looking good.

Hopefully the next few months bring much needed rain to all of us.

Army Corps to move forward with rewriting the river system manual
February 1st, 2008
(thanks to Craig for the link) Despite Sen. Richard Shelby’s ridiculous objections, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan to move forward on updating the operating manuals for the ACF river system.

Parts of the manuals have not been updated since they were first written in 1958 and obviously need an overhaul. As Senator Saxby Chambliss points out, “for the ACF Basin, the only approved master manual was prepared in 1958 and does not even include the federal facilities at West Point, Walter F. George or George W. Andrews.”

As with other recent moves, this is unlikely to offer any benefit in the near future. However, it’s nice to see they’re at least doing something to help the long-term outlook.

3. All they need to do is have a big public prayer session.
Then everything will be fine.

20. NPR reported yesterday that there's no improvement in Atlanta.
They're now discussing what will become of the thousands of
outdoor swimming pools in the greater Atlanta area.

11. the city of Durham
is adjacent to Raleigh. They are in as bad or worse shape re. water supply. The local officials have gone on record saying they just expect the public to buy water if it runs out. The average person uses 12 gals or so per day apparently. I think that includes a shower, clothes washing, cooking and drinking.

21. 209 days' supply left in Durham
From the city of Durham website:

Days of supply of easily accessible, premium water remaining (Lake Michie, Little River Reservoir and Teer Quarry combined): 143 days
Days of less accessible water below the intake structures remaining: 66 days (mmmm, sludge.)
Total days of supply = 209

Apparently, we are a little better off than Raleigh, but we do have Stage IV water restrictions in effect.

Last I checked, though, we're not really "adjacent" to Raleigh. Takes me a little while on 147 and 40 to get there.

22. well OK
if you count sludge...

If it were that low, I'd buy bottled water to drink. I wouldn't be sure they'd get the nasty stuff out of the sludge. That's usually where chemicals and metals end up. The people who couldn't afford bottled water would have to drink the water squeezed from sludge I guess. (And how long can a city go on sludge water?) The point is that there's really not much of a plan for such extreme water shortages and the indication is that the officials aren't equipped to deal with it. Feels like they are just going to let the ship hit the pier.

Adjacent is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. The urbanity of it all seems juxtaposed to me. :hi:

14. We could have lasted through this drought if we had controlled development
better. There's a proposal to try to put a "water resources" impact fee on the developers. It won't work because we couldn't even get a "impact fee" put on developers for roads and schools.

No one seemed to plan that with all the development in the Triange Area that we wouldn't have enough water in our huge lake systems. Hopefully, that will change as climate change progresses. Otherwise we are going to have "bottom things like snakes" coming out of our faucets and toilets when we get down to the lake bottom.

16. That development will be the region's undoing one way or another
The entire area is one big sprawl, with no public transportation. So, not only was water taken for granted, but cheap eptroleum was as well.

18. LOL!
Hmmm. Everyone in my neighborhood has a well. But I still use it sparingly. Always have. I hope the drought will break soon.

I hate to say it, but I'm really hoping/praying/wishing for a hurricane. :-(

19. Raleigh's citizens haven't take conserving water seriously
their consumption hasn't dropped much at all according to the news.

Maybe moving into Stage II will help get their attention.
