Storm Riders...Check in. How are we doing?
It's extremely windy hear now in SE Iowa and the trees look like they are covered in glass. The rain has turned over to snow as the temperatures have dropped and the wind gusts are whipping it in sheets. The windows on two sides of my house are coated with ice and you can't see out from them. I just heard the county road truck go by. I don't think we could make it out of the lane right now.

We've lost our satellite for television and the internet went off for a while. I understand that there are many lines down and about a large number people without electricity now. On the radio, the utilities people were saying that it would take several days to get the power back on to everyone.

2. Our city is sure earning its name today
The wind has been howling all afternoon.

Along with the wind is a bunch of sleety ice which is piling up on top of all the unmelted snow from last month's storm.

5. Lay in a stock of groceries, some good reading material,
and some movies. You're going to need it. Walking is even hazardous. We're inside until something gives. Our wooden fences have icicles suspended from them that looks like fringe. I wanted to take some pictures but I can't find the battery pack for my camera.

Local news just saying that lots of power lines that are down are down because the electric line poles just snapped in two from the weight of the ice on the lines. They've opened up college and high school gyms and some community centers in various towns as expanded homeless shelters.

7. Was working in this nonsense earlier

And those ice pellets coming out of the sky hurt when they hit my face. The roads weren't all that bad, credit to the city and state workers, who toil long hours and earn every penny they make. Almost couldn't get in the damn house though, because the storm door handle was iced over. Good night to stay home and post on DU.
On edit- Also in SE Iowa, Davenport. When winter arrived, it really arrived. It's time for it to go now.

13. And just now I saw lightning.
Now this is a storm system. Thank you for your well wishes. I guess one has to be a bit, um, different to live here and take this stuff year after year.

Wouldn't live anywhere else but on these prairies.

10. Illinois/Wisconsin border

We've got a couple of inches down and the wind is blowing really hard. I just took the dog out and I could feel ice pellets mixed in with the snow. The snow has let up a bit, but it's still coming down. The harder stuff is supposed to hit us in the later hours.

On an another note.....it's sorta cool to "watch" this storm come in, my husband is observing some new weather equipment and so far it has been spot on. It was accurate on when the storm would start to when the snow would let up.

It's horrible for everyone without electric, especially in the rural areas.

Again...stay safe & warm.

Cheers

12. Northeast Iowa here
Bremer County. This sooooo sucks! We've had power go out twice already today. Longest was just one hour, thank whoever. Here's some pics I took today. Just sleet so far. Supposed to get 8"-12" tonight. Lucky, I always watch the weather so we went and got all stocked up yesterday. Lots of Easter candy! :9

There may not be much left of our huge Maple when this is done!

14. Looks like our view of the world too.
Thanks for the pics. We have some trees that and bending heavily with the weight of the ice. I hope they hold.
