Was NRCC Staffer Cooking The Books?
By Paul Kiel - February 6, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/02/was_nrcc_staffer_cooking_the_b.php

Ever since Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), the chairman of the National Republican Campaign Committee, disclosed that "we learned earlier this week of irregularities in our financial audit process," people have been scrambling to find out what's up. Cole pointed to a single former employee as the culprit, and said that the irregularities might "include fraud."

Today, the Politico reports that, the employee, Chris Ward, was a longtime employee of the NRCC, and the committee, already hurting in comparison with its well-funded House Democratic counterpart, may be in for even more hurt as Ward's "irregularities" are sorted out:

“There is a sense that this could be very damaging to the committee,” said a Republican insider close to the GOP leadership.

The precise details of the suspected accounting irregularities and their possible fallout are not entirely clear. NRCC officials and top GOP leaders are being tight-lipped in large part because the FBI is investigating the matter. ....

... Raw Story also notes that Ward was a partner at the firm that handled $230,000 worth of business for the Swift Boat Vets in 2004. So he got around.

7. It wasn't just to save Bush
He wanted Bush's old warm spot in bed with the K Street lobbyist. Which was something he begrudged Bush since the 2000 elections.

As it turns out that spot may be a tad warmer than he'll find comfortable.

9. The organized crime party might be in bigger trouble than we realize.

Remember what else occurred in the Spring of 2004? 8 Billion dollars of money sent to Iraq went unaccounted for....poof...vanished. This was $ that was 'managed' by vetted Republicans only. I'm betting that the balance sheet shows large, undocumented inflow transactions and disbursements to candidates and other "expenses" that were unaccounted for...because it took a lot of money in 2004 to game the election.

If I'm that Treasurer, I'm thinking about the benefits of the protected witness program....

contributions last year on legal fees. He has now opened up a legal defense fund so that his same supporters can double-contribute. He's so worried about his future that he's running campaign ads here -- usually he just takes us for granted -- and actually cold-called me yesterday for a "telephonic town hall meeting." "Yes, I'm actually here on the line." I chose not to participate.

Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 07:23 PM by Jeffersons Ghost
He'll set another record. He's set plenty and will likely set one for the most pardons by ANY president or maybe more pardons than all other presidents combined.

On edit: Jim Hogue has interviewed Sibel Edmonds and CIA whistleblower "Miss Moneypenny". The Baltimore Chronicle has published articles by Jim Hogue based on those interviews.
