KEYSTONE, Colo. -- Former ABC News correspondent John McWethy died Wednesday after a skiing accident at Keystone Ski Resort.

McWethy, 61, was pronounced dead at Summit Medical Center in Frisco.

According to the Summit County coroner's office, McWethy died after missing a turn on an intermediate slope and hit a tree chest-first.

McWethy was a correspondent for ABC News from 1979-2003, primarily working as the network's National Security Correspondent.

He retired in July, 2003 but continued to serve a special correspondent to the network for three years.

He and his family moved to Boulder last year.

It's just that many times back when I was skiing a lot I used to like to go really fast. I remember thinking that I was really lucky a few times when I caught an edge that I was able to recover. I don't know if that's what happened with him but it wouldn't surprise me.

Good news is he probably never felt anything and went out enjoying life. I just feel bad for his family since they just moved here last year.
