I'm paying ATT/BellSouth for 3+ MBPS DSL.
My service is sporadic, at best. They sent a technician out. He measured the incoming signal at the junction box as 2.9 MBPS. At that time the ATT website speed analyzer showed 1.0 MBPS at the computer.

ATT blamed the home security system's filters and switches. The security system company came out and changed filters and switches last month. My download speed increased to 1.2 MBPS.

Now it has degraded to 214 KBPS (KILOS!). Day after slow day.

Q: What might I tell ATT/BellSouth when I talk to him/her in Bangalore tomorrow?

1. Make sure you explain you need the high-speed connection so you can run your business...

You'll get much better service.

3. I had DSL when I first moved to my house. Do what I did, switch to a
cable modem. I have Dish Network for TV, but have cable as well just for an internet connection. It took care of my problem.

4. Treat the problem as you would an antenna with a high SWR
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 10:12 PM by LastDemocratInSC
Disconnect all the stuff that's connected to the line to get the cleanest possible connection. Better yet, take a notebook computer to the outside junction box and plug up to the customer port and test from there. Simplify, simplify.

12. Heh, Heh. You must know that I'm a ham operator (amateur extra).
Then you must know that I tried all that. That's the problem with dealing with Dell/ATT/WHATEVER's "Jim Smith" in Bangalore. "Jim, buddy! I tried that before I called! I ain't the common denominator you think I am!"

5. just switch to comcast
I live in Atlanta too. Comcast sucked the big one at my house even though everyone I know is in love with the service. After 2 dozen or more service calls I got pissed off and went Bellsouth DSL - at my house the service is perfect all the time.

I figure if ATT stinks at your house then Comcast will rock. :)

But our cable modem is screamingly fast.

8. I had a home security system that hosed DSL, too.
It was just nasty inside wiring, we believe. We had to go wireless for security to enable DSL to work at all; it was that or pay to have the wiring re-run.

AT&T will tell you to try plugging in your modem at the demarc (you probably laughed at the--rightly--when they mentioned this). If you can do that, and also plug in a laptop outside, you can rerun their speed test and actually check the line to their central office/fiber hut.

16. Actually, I'm about to tell the home security company to pack it in.
Rip it out. I never arm it anyway. I think it is a ripoff. Nick-Nick stands guard 24/7 when we are in town (which is most of the time). Other than fire-watch, the system is useless.

27. Love Nick! Our security system screwed with our DSL also.
I think we actually had to cut some wires. We moved into a house that had an older, non working security system. Even at that, it interfered with our DSL.

13. There is the fallacy is ultra-fast bandwidth
It's not often you'll find servers than can push data that fast, most likely they have thousands of other downloaders, so your top speed will never be reached.
Instead, run speed tests on a regular basis:

20. Get a program called "Sam Spade".
It's free and easy to use. Run the "Traceroute" feature to http://www.att.com

Post the results in the computer forum. Copy those results in the edit>copy menu feature.

It's not always consistent though, my SlingBox freezes up every couple of days. Not sure why?

Nothing more frustrating that paying for a service that you are not receiving. Give em HELL! I HATE AT&T. :grr:
