Romney's out. Suspends campaign. (AP)
Guess there was no magic in his panties.

WASHINGTON - John McCain effectively sealed the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday as chief rival Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign. "I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," Romney told conservatives.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney told the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Romney's decision leaves McCain as the top man standing in the GOP race, with Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul far behind in the delegate hunt. It was a remarkable turnaround for McCain, who some seven months ago was barely viable, out of cash and losing staff. The four-term Arizona senator, denied his party's nomination in 2000, was poised to succeed George W. Bush as the GOP standard-bearer.

14. conservatives whining - opportunity is knocking!
I am a disgruntled libertarian-Republican and plan to vote for the Democrat in November. I prefer Obama but will vote for Hillary if she is the nominee.
I prefer Obama because he promises to end the war in Iraq. IMO, if he beats the war issue to death, he will win the nomination and the election.
MANY Republicans secretly want an end to this unnecessary war but are afraid to say so. No one likes to be called anti-American or anti-Semitic, but we WILL vote for an antiwar candidate.

I believe Obama is a much better candidate than Hillary; he is easier on the eyes and especially on the EARS. If the Democrats want to nominate Hillary, PLEASE tell her she can't out-bellow Ted Kennedy and she shouldn't try. Ted is twice her size and full of testosterone. When Hillary shrieks, she sounds like every man's worst nightmare woman. Tell her to speak normally and hire a good sound man and she can beat that loser John McCain in November!

I've been a life-long libertarian Republican and this is a HUGE step for me. I know others like me are ready to take the plunge. USE IT!

:wtf:

likely nominee.

10. this is bad
He's leaving because he thinks he has a better chance to run again in 2012. He's leaving but almost certainly not gone.

11. What's up with the word "suspends" campaign?
Edited on Thu Feb-07-08 01:44 PM by Iris
What's wrong with "drops out"?

on edit: I don't like having to read between the lines for headlines about people I don't care to know too much more about.

15. Suspends = he keeps his delegates. Drops out = his delegates are free
to vote for whomever they choose.

19. Neocons are too smart to serve in the military
Soldiers and Marines do not come from wealthy neocon families.
They come from families that have to work for a living.
If someone knows a neocon kid serving in Iraq, post it here and I will STFU.
I admit it: my son will go live in his mom's country before he is drafted to fight in a neocon war.
He's learning the language already:
Hey neocons: skata nafas; para poula!

17. great - now the Reps will be unified and the Dems will beat up on each other.
Not good. McCain can move more towards the center and the Dems will have to cater to the base - turning off the moderates.

20. I agree with Tweety - it was Romney starting his 2012 campaign
No doubt about it. Romney just started his 2012 campaign. The sleazoids in that audience just love this Gollum-like crap ... they play-act like they dwell in deep, dark caverns dealing and double-dealing.
