WTF did Socrates know anyway?

This country that pulled itself from the womb of England over two hundred years ago has seemingly become preoccupied with violence in the last fifty years. Why?

We are invading countries that have shown no real threat to us (this ain't new. See Dole in the 19th C). Many feel that they need to be armed to the teeth in case a baddie comes to rape their dog and do something nasty to themexelves or their SO.

Have we become a fear based society? If so, what made us that way?

I can only speak from experience and have to say that the only times I have been a an aggressatory (is that a word?) situation involving firearms I was either in a place where it should be expected and I was stupid to be there, or I was just in the wrong duck blind at the wrong time.

Please, someone explain it to me. Why is pacifism so bad? Even Sgt. York was a pacifist.

I would love to hear some serious answers.

1. Is Alvin York really a good example?
I'm not goading you, but I am befuddled by the choice.
It would seem that he would more rightly be termed a conditional pacifist.
Because, y'know...
