Floridians were shocked last week when police announced that the spokesman for the state's Department of Children and Families had been arrested and charged with peddling child pornography. But buried in news accounts of the case was a curious detail: the official in question had listed the state's current Republican Governor, Charlie Crist, as a reference when he applied for his post in 2005.

Gov. Crist returned to the news as the nation awaited the outcome of the Republican presidential primary in Florida. The Sunshine State's governor's endorsement of Sen. John McCain late in the campaign may have helped push McCain across the finish line to take the state's 57 delegates. Crist's endorsement also contributed to ending the campaign of Rudy Giuliani, who had heavily courted the governor's thumbs up.

Just after the Florida electoral contest, Tampa Bay police announced the arrest of Al Zimmerman, the spokesman for the state's Department of Children and Families. Zimmerman, a former TV reporter, was charged with 8 child pornography counts after taking photos of two underage boys performing sexual acts. Some evidence indicates that he may have met one of the boys on the job, and that he may have had additional victims. He could face up to 120 years in jail.

While the news prompted state officials to say they were reviewing the personnel files of state employees for red flags, Zimmerman appeared to have come highly recommended when he was appointed to his post in 2005. Among the five references he listed, one of them was Crist, then the state Attorney General under Gov. Jeb Bush.

3. I have to play devil's advocate here....

...A young man, recently graduated from the college where I teach (in Florida) was arrested last week on child pornography charges. He is a very talented young man, extremely gifted in his field of study, and any professor in this department would have written him a glowing recommendation for a job or for graduate study (and many already have!) Teaching him for four years, sometimes in a one-on-one situation, NO ONE suspected anything like this. I have to imagine anyone involved in child porn isn't corwing about it at the workplace. I can't see how Charlie Crist having written a recommendation for someone damns Crist in any way, especially since there doesn't appear to be any prior arrest record.

PS - In case there's any doubt from the above, child porn is without question reprehensible and I hope this guy is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

11. Thanks! I usually do my HTML from scratch with notepad,....

but I've also got CoffeeCup HTML Editor software... for when I'm feeling lazy. I've also got a great PDF writer/converter. All I do with that is write in notepad or wordpad, click "print" and it turns it into the .pdf file you see....

12. I use NVU (Kompozer), a free WYSIWYG editor.

http://www.kompozer.net/ I used to hand code, but why do that when there are all those good free tools out there. In OSX any document can be made the same way using print.

13. I use NVU also.. I like it because it makes positioning pictures easier

just drag-n-drop where you want it... I've tried several different editors. I play with a lot of different software, trying out new things here & there.. it gives me something to do when I'm bored..

Mark Foley was on the House Committee on Missing and Exploited Children, while he was exploiting children.

Now this guy Zimmerman's accused, and he's spokesman for the "Department of Children and Families". :eyes:

16. You are being very UNFAIR. - I am lifetime close friends with someone who molested children.

Everyone who knew the guy thought he was the salt of the earth. The man is a pillar of the community. I cannot tell you all the wonderful things he has done for the community at large and for those who know him. We went to school together, dated for a short time, have been very close friends for decades - close personally, in business, in charity work...... One day it came out he had been molesting his 5 children for more than 8 years. One of his kids finally broke down and told a teacher. Their mother didn't even know. This man confessed to his wife immediately that it was true.

I am not a bad person because someone I know had a secret life. It doesn't make Crist a bad person either.
