"Yay! Defense! Defense! We love Jesus!"
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A Catholic school principal has organized sensitivity training for students who shouted "We love Jesus" during a basketball game against a school with Jewish students.

The word "Jew" also was painted on a gym wall behind the seats of Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School students attending the Feb. 2 game at Norfolk Academy, said Dennis W. Price, principal of the Virginia Beach school.

Price who also watched the game, said the rivals exchanged chants, "Then, at some point, our students were chanting, 'We love Jesus.'"

"It was obviously in reference to the Jewish population of Norfolk Academy; that's the only way you can take that," he added.

7. Was it ever that good in the first place?
I'm only 20, but it seems to me that these kinds of things were way more common in the past. I'm reminded of a bit of my school's history (I go to the University of Toronto) when in 1928 some boys from the Anglican dorm joined in an anti-Semitic riot.

I'm not happy with any of this, but it just seems to me, a Jew, that incidents like this are becoming less commonplace.

3. Lovely
And I guess these students forgot the little detail that Jesus was a Jew.

5. Shhh!!! If you tell them their heads will explode...
Oh go ahead, it'll probably be fun to tell them and then watch them as they fumble.

4. In response to the word "Jew" being painted on the wall at Norfolk Academy,
I hope somebody painted "Jesus WAS a Jew, you schmucks!" at Bishop Sullivan.

8. Ironical...
I'm sure Jesus--a man of peace and dignity--would
be oh-so honored to see these little nutballs
using their "love" for Him to denigrate an entire
gymnasium full of people.

I hope theses parents who paid top dollar for their
kids to learn about Jesus and avoid the evils of public
school--get a refund check!

9. I'll bet that there are plenty of fundies around
who don't believe that Bishop Sullivan students, or any other Catholics, love Jesus (or even are Christians), so I guess it's all in how you look at it.

11. A lot of that is just poor sportsmanship
Part of today's sports-fan culture is the notion that the crowd is a participant, not a spectator, and that ANYTHING goes if it distracts or hurts the other team. Georgia Tech's game last night against Virginia is an example. The UVA students were given these mylar windowshade sort of banners that roll up into two little scrolls. One side was orange and said Go Hoos or something, and the other was reflective Mylar. They figured out they were REALLY reflective, and started pointing the shiney side toward the court when Tech had the ball. It was friggin' blinding. The officials forced them to quit with the threat of a technical foul. That's typical fan behavior these days.

I doubt that today's Catholic-school kids are anywhere near as anti-Semitic as their grandparents were 50 years ago, but they're a lot poorer sports fans.
