1. Yes.

They are members of the RNC. There are 123 of them. They act in the same capacity as Superdelegates.

They are less important for the Repub process because they have many many more winner take all states rather than proportional allocation of delegates.

In the Democratic party, the Superdelegates will account for about 1/5 the selection process. 4/5 will be the voters.

5. Huh? They do so have caucuses...
The repubs have caucuses. On Super Tuesday, Romney won most, if not all, of the caucuses, whereas McCain won the primary states.

"The Republican Party does not have superdelegates. There are 463 unpledged delegates to the Republican National Convention out of 2,380 total delegates. Of those, 123 are members of the Republican National Committee."

7. Super delegates are the last vestiges of the old political machines

like Tammany Hall. They should be abolished. They're undemocratic.

On edit: They did come in a little handy this time, humiliating Lieberman by telling him "screw you" under what's informally called the Zell Miller law, that a superdelegate can't cross party lines to give endorsements and keep his place. However, he should have been replaced by the winner of the Democratic primary in 2006, Ned Lamont. He won't be replaced, however.
