Bush Admin Breaks Law (Again): Opens Border To Unsafe Mexican Trucks

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters is the latest member of the Bush administration to break the law: She continues to give dangerous Mexican trucks access to our highways despite overwhelmingly bipartisan measures passed by Congress and signed by President Bush.

Two of Mexico's largest trucking organizations also oppose the DOT's so-called demonstration project. "It is of interest to a small group of business associates in the United States," says the president of the country's largest group of owner-operators.

Hoffa was on CSPAN this morning - Great appearance! He said The Teamsters are talking to Hillary and Obama - haven't made up their minds yet on who to support. We all need to know what is going on here. Even after Congress and the Senate told them NOT to do this and stopped the funding they are going along with it! He talked about the Super Highway where people will have to pay people from other countries to be on the Super Highway. Think this is bunk - check this story on The Nation out:

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070827/hayes

When completed, the highway will run from Mexico City to Toronto, slicing through the heartland like a dagger sunk into a heifer at the loins and pulled clean to the throat. It will be four football fields wide, an expansive gully of concrete, noise and exhaust, swelled with cars, trucks, trains and pipelines carrying water, wires and God knows what else. Through towns large and small it will run, plowing under family farms, subdevelopments, acres of wilderness. Equipped with high-tech electronic customs monitors, freight from China, offloaded into nonunionized Mexican ports, will travel north, crossing the border with nary a speed bump, bound for Kansas City, where the cheap goods manufactured in booming Far East factories will embark on the final leg of their journey into the nation's Wal-Marts.

And this NAFTA Superhighway, as it is called, is just the beginning, the first stage of a long, silent coup aimed at supplanting the sovereign United States with a multinational North American Union.

Even as this plot unfolds in slow motion, the mainstream media are silent; politicians are in denial. Yet word is getting out. Like samizdat, info about the highway has circulated in niche media platforms old and new, on right-wing websites like WorldNetDaily, in the pages of low-circulation magazines like the John Birch Society's The New American and increasingly on the letters to the editor page of local newspapers.

.......................

Bush Administration is laughing in the Congress's face - They have given him a blank check by not impeaching him and Cheney! He thinks he can get away with anything now!

20. And here we were thinking that it was the Supreme Court that they wanted.
Taking over the Supreme Court is too slow. Taking over the Justice Department gives much quicker results.

North American Union to Replace USA?

by Jerome R. Corsi
Posted May 19, 2006

.... President Bush intends to abrogate U.S. sovereignty to the North American Union, a new economic and political entity which the President is quietly forming, much as the European Union has formed.

The blueprint President Bush is following was laid out in a 2005 report entitled "Building a North American Community" published by the left-of-center Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). The CFR report connects the dots between the Bush administration's actual policy on illegal immigration and the drive to create the North American Union: ....

Bush Administration Quietly Plans NAFTA Super Highway

by Jerome R. Corsi
Posted Jun 12, 2006

.... A good reason Bush does not want to secure the border with Mexico may be that the administration is trying to create express lanes for Mexican trucks to bring containers with cheap Far East goods into the heart of the U.S., all without the involvement of any U.S. union workers on the docks or in the trucks.

Mr. Corsi is the author of several books, including "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry" (along with John O'Neill), "Black Gold Stranglehold: The Myth of Scarcity and the Politics of Oil" (along with Craig R. Smith), and "Atomic Iran: How the Terrorist Regime Bought the Bomb and American Politicians." He is a frequent guest on the G. Gordon Liddy radio show. He will soon co-author a new book with Jim Gilchrist on the Minuteman Project.

North American Union Would Trump U.S. Supreme Court

by Jerome R. Corsi
Posted Jun 19, 2006

The Bush Administration is pushing to create a North American Union out of the work on-going in the Department of Commerce under the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America in the NAFTA office headed by Geri Word. A key part of the plan is to expand the NAFTA tribunals into a North American Union court system that would have supremacy over all U.S. law, even over the U.S. Supreme Court, in any matter related to the trilateral political and economic integration of the United States, Canada and Mexico. ....

Thank you for posting this stuff.

Sometimes people you don't like much are actually right about things, unfortunately.

13. pipelines carrying water...???
if they think that those of us in the great lake states are going to let them pipe OUR water to the desert for people to live on- they have NO IDEA what kind of fight they'll have on their hands.
after all- i don't seem to remember the oil-rich states doing us any favors when the mideast embargo happened in the 70's- that oil didn't belong to ALL the states- same deal applies to the water in the great lakes- if you want to partake in it- move to one of the states that border them.

14. So illegal immigrants are ok, but allowing legal Mexicans in accordance with a treaty
to which we are a signatory is not ok?

Got it.

By the way, how exactly are these Mexican trucks "unsafe?" Are they not subject to the same laws as US trucks when they are on US highways? Will they not stop in the same weigh stations and be put out of service, just like US trucks will for violations?

- Those truckers are just trying to make better lives for their families.
- We're all humans; why do we allow ourselves to be ruled by red and blue lines on a map?
- They're only doing jobs Americans won't do. (See recent news articles re: shortage of truckers.)

See? All of the arguments that work so well in supporting illegal immigration work just as well to support legal workers who are coming here within the framework of the law.

Why are illegals fine, but legal workers are not? Personally, I'd rather workers come here legally.

Mexican Truck Company With Poor Safety Record Drops Out Of Cross-Border Pilot Project

February 7, 2008

(Washington, D.C.) – The Teamsters Union demands to know why U.S. inspectors opened the border to a Mexican truck company with an abysmal safety record.

The company last week dropped out of the cross-border trucking pilot program with no explanation from the Transportation Department.

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters claimed her inspectors had carefully checked Mexican trucks before they were permitted to use American highways as part of her cross-border trucking pilot project.

One of the companies, Trinity Industries de Mexico, withdrew its 16 trucks from the program on February 1.

“Mary Peters has some explaining to do,” said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters general president. “She claimed that she only opened the border to Mexican trucks after they passed rigorous safety inspections. Now we learn that Trinity Industries averaged 112 safety violations per truck—according to the Transportation Department’s own statistics—in the year before it was allowed to use American highways.”

Hoffa questioned whether it was a coincidence that Trinity dropped out of the pilot program shortly after a declaration was made to the federal court about the company’s many serious safety violations.

The Teamsters, Public Citizen, the Sierra Club and the Owner-Operators Independent Drivers Association are challenging the legality of the cross-border pilot program in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Oral arguments will be heard on February 12.

The U.S. Senate voted 75 to 23 and the House voted 411 to 3 to keep the border closed to unsafe Mexican trucks. The legislation became law on December 26, 2007 as part of the Omnibus budget bill. Under Peter’s direction, the Department of Transportation has refused to comply with the law.

********************

Let me just say this - I took my Mexican step-son to VA with my step-daughter in 1975 and got them married and then took them to Detroit to get his papers and fought for them until the man gave them to him.

What I don't understand is why don't you and other people realize that we are loosing the very thing that the immigrants came here to the U.S. for! We are becoming the rich and the poor! Didn't you read that some of the Mexican trucking companies are saying that they are against this too? AND you trust the Bush Administration to check these drivers and their trucks??? If you do you are more trusting by a heck of a lot more then I am!

For insurance - For safety - For jobs - For ecological reasons - we should stand with the Teamsters on this one!

18. The Teamsters want what's good for the Teamsters.
Not what's good for America, not what's good for Teamsters members, only what's good for the Teamsters.

I had several people come to work at my shop during the strike back around 2000 or so, when they were totally fed up with the way the Teamsters were in no way representing their desires by prolonging the strike.
