15. Horrifying, isn't it?
And THIS is why some of us rail against the closed government that prefers NONE of this be known by the public at large.

And WHY corporate allies of BushInc spent the 80s and 90s buying control of all available broadcast newsmedia.

44. It always astounds me to hear that a Dem
could support secrecy and privilege. Are they those "Raygun Dems" that have been shoved to the forefront recently?

They are the ones that still refuse to question their "beliefs". They roam DU and some seriously roam in the dungeon. Unless you have complete, total rock solid and completely irrefutable evidence, they prefer ignorance.

Those that refuse to examine their own motives for whatever belief system they 'follow' will never promote transparency.

Ignorance is bliss; until it isn't.

Interesting times to live in, eh, blm? :)

61. had a logic prof who was foond of saying "we are limited as language users"
some people speak the language of cold, hard-edged reason -- their reality is defined as such.

some speak the language of heart; sensory intuition, social intelligence et al -- their reality is informed as such.

some do both -- and you would expect their "realm of the possible" would be more strategically advantageous.

i think that those who seem to refuse to examine their motives, are often simply unable to. they are limited by their conceptual framework and don't have any other conceptual frameworks to fill in the blank. therefore, questioning their beliefs threatening. ergo, they cruise the dungeon to pick fights with those whose conceptual frameworks differ from theirs -- this gives them the illusion of mastery (a blissful state).

interesting times, indeed.

94. Hurts to say that some on DU do that, even knowing full well the truth in
these threads. But they will excuse complicity of Dems and rationalize their deceit as a something that couldn't be avoided in the 'real world'of politics.

To me that is the wing of the party that HAS NO RESPECT for any American citizen and they don't look at the public as citizens to be informed, but as voters to be manipulated and discarded at will.

77. extremely interesting post
I appreciate your point of the role of language in shaping how you experience the world. I see it around me alot because i am fortunate to live and work in an environment rich with people with diverse world views. In addition to our beliefs selecting the language we use to define the world around us, there are neurological constructs that predispose us to take in information that is familiar to us and to reject information that is not familiar to us. I often remind myself that although we may be in the same room with someone, our experience of that shared space is unique to each of us.

a visual expression of this is the picture that is the old hag or the young woman. they are both there but can't be seen at the same time.

107. a good example of this is the "binary opposition" -- we have a language bias
toward light/dark, male/female, sorts of oppositions. moreover, we give primacy to one part of the binary: light over dark. male over female.

as we use these binaries in science, for instance, we limit the sorts of answers we get from our observations. for a great discussion on this, see Evelyn Fox Keller Science and Gender..

110. you're totally welcome -- haven't worked this part of my brain in a while :)
was one of my big research themes in school so many years ago. it's kinda cliché to say that we are homo langua -- that what separates us from the other apes is our language ability. so, we've climbed up the evolutionary ladder. good for us. now, we can use these big brains of ours to go the next steps. find our limitations and stretch our boundaries.

i think that's what it's going to take to survive. that's our evolutionary challenge.

it'll take some searching, but there's a layman geneticist (iirc genetics is her area) who has garnered lots of attention for not being a science insider, and made amazing advances because she isn't beholden to the intellectual biases of that culture of science. i'll try to dig up her story for you. it's very inspiring. i also get the same inspiration from people working in the area of energy storage -- battery technology -- they've pushed the boundaries of the science to the point of breakthru...using viruses and abalone to store a charge way more efficiently than with traditional methods.

97. It's even more complicated than that

Some people can't stand to hear bad news and would rather have the details glossed over because
it's just too painful to find out the truth, which is often disruptive to the psychological and
physical comforts that they may enjoy.

The first parallel I thought of was a survey I conducted some years ago to find out if women
would want to know if their husbands were having an affair with another woman. I was really
surprised that most said "no".

They were mostly concerned that the affair remain hidden from everyone - wife, children,
other family, friends -- associates, etc. Didn't even want the woman to go to the same
places that the wife did so that clerks and waiters wouldn't know either.

It was a revealing survey.

I think it's possible that for some of the same reasons many people don't want the bad news
about their country and don't want to think that our leaders are criminals. Too
uncomfortable.

105. this actually goes to the heart of the idea -- an extramarital affair destroys the conceptual
framework the wronged spouse has relied on for the duration of the marriage. when we say someone has a "nervous break down" b/c of this sort of marital problem, what is really happening is their world-view has been pull out from under them. it's not just a matter of being jilted -- the person often experiences the infidelity as a break with reality.

64. Remarks by Weld at Clinton Foundation: "I had a pretty good record on narcotics enforcement in the
Justice Department under President Ronald Reagan." OH THE IRONY!

I sure had a funny summer. In late April, President Clinton reached across the aisle in the interest of bipartisanship and asked me to be ambassador to Mexico. And I said I would. Then in June I saw this man on television saying, Governor Weld is not ambassadorial quality. Governor Weld is unfit to be an ambassador. Governor Weld is soft on drugs. And I won't permit the United States Senate to have a hearing on this nomination.

I asked who this man was, and I was told it was Senator Jesse Helms. So I asked another senator, who was a friend of mine and a friend of his, to ask Senator Helms if he would meet with me -- anyplace, anytime, day or night. Then I asked another senator and also a third person, a close friend of Senator Helms, to ask him the same thing. Same answer: No meeting.

I was puzzled because I thought I had a pretty good record on narcotics enforcement in the Justice Department under President Ronald Reagan. And actually, the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration under President Reagan thought so too. He wrote a piece about it in the Los Angeles Times. So I didn't think that narcotics enforcement could be the real reason for Senator Helms's opposition. And even if it was, I thought I'd do okay at the hearing and be able to satisfy any worries that Senator Helms or the 17 other senators on his committee might have.

when he had difficulty getting ANY other lawmaker to back him up for a YEAR?

Jesse Helms. He was the chair of the senate committee and Kerry showed him some of the evidence he had found.

Kerry appealed to Helms' sense of patriotism - but the good kind of patriotism that can make a difference once its tapped.

91. BTW Blm, I just finished a good piece from someone @ Kos about the WTI Incinerator:
which of course ties Jackson Stephens to both the Bush & Clinton Dynasties:

Ask Hillary About This Tonight. I Dare You.
by Zwoof

Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 03:40:46 AM PST

Several days ago I posted a diary about the WTI and Von Roll Toxic Waste Incinerator. Because I posted it the same day as the South Carolina Primary, several Kossacks have asked me to repost.
Instead of duplicating the diary, I have added some new developments, and data.

While I was writing the original piece on the history of this foul project, a new ruling from the Ohio EPAallowed this incinerator, located 1,100 feet from an elementary school, to accept even more hazardous waste (anthrax, radioactive waste, infectious medical waste and mixed hazardous waste from Hurricane Katrina) than the original permit that was shrouded in corruption and approved by the Clinton Administration

Clinton and Al Gore promised the residents of East Liverpool, Ohio that they would not allow this incinerator originally approved by Bush '41 to operate. However, a Clinton EPA appointee, recommended by his classmate Hillary Clinton, approved the permit.
This is a tangled tale of corporatism, broken promises and an environmental disaster waiting to happen.

119. More madness from same folks
http://www.nicanet.org/?p=460

John Feeley, head of Central American Affairs at the US State Department announced this week that, as requested by President Daniel Ortega, a mission from the State Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will visit Managua in early February to meet with Ortega and explain in depth the links between the DEA and the Nicaraguan National Police. Earlier this month Ortega accused DEA officials in Nicaragua of paying individual police officers to carry out favors for them. “With the pretext of combating drug trafficking, is corrupting our police officers,” said Ortega at a National Police event on Jan. 10.

The allegations were firmly denied by the US Embassy in Managua in a press statement. It was denied that the DEA makes any “direct or indirect” payments to individual police officers in Nicaragua. According to the US Embassy statement the DEA’s activities with the Nicaraguan National Police consist of training, technical and expert assistance and donations of equipment.

On Jan. 25, during the Sixth ALBA summit, Ortega reiterated his distrust of the DEA saying that after he assumed the presidency in Jan. 2007 he became aware of a DEA plan to set up a telephone espionage system in Nicaragua, a plan which was aborted when Ortega won the presidential elections in 2006.
Ortega said he planned to review the cooperation agreement between Nicaragua and the DEA in order to establish a set of clear rules and regulations for the US agency to follow within the country. He said a set of rules and regulations is necessary because “practically, is occupying Nicaragua.”

In statements to the Nicaraguan press this week John Feeley went on to say that during the meeting with Ortega the DEA mission planned to discuss the Merida initiative, a regional security initiative between the US, Mexico and Central America funded by the US with the aim of combating drug trafficking, international crime and terrorism. Ortega has openly criticized and formally complained to the US government about how the program is to be funded. US President George Bush has requested US$550 million for the first phase of the program, US$500 million of which is to go to Mexico and the other US$50 million of which is to go shared between the Central American countries. Nicaragua, considered by Washington as the most secure country in Central America, is to receive just US$2 million for the first phase of the program, which Ortega described as an “insult” to the Nicaraguan army and police force which are key players in the regional fight against drug trafficking.

In other US diplomatic news, last week Ambassador Paul Trivelli confirmed plans to leave his post in February. A source from the Nicaraguan foreign ministry leaked the name of the man to become the new US Ambassador in Nicaragua: Robert Callahan, the former US spokesman in Iraq. Callahan worked extensively with John Negroponte who was the US Ambassador in Honduras during the Contra War and he is considered as a fierce anti-Sandinista figure.

Emphasis mine.

17. THE TROUBLING NOMINATION OF WILLIAM WELD
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 05:42 PM by seemslikeadream

THE TROUBLING NOMINATION OF WILLIAM WELD
The Significance of the Drug Trade in Mexico
Bill Clinton has nominated Massachusetts governor William Weld for U.S. ambassador to Mexico. This is a truly troubling nomination, because of Weld's past in the Iran-Contra drug affair.

During Iran Contra, William Weld was head of the Justice Department Criminal Division, and as such responsible for covering up U.S. complicity in drug smuggling to finance Central American wars. When Senate investigator Jack Blum tried to investigate the Contra connection to the West Coast cocaine trade (recently resurrected by the San Jose Mercury News), Weld fought giving him access to essential records and to witnesses in government custody. Instead, U.S. attorneys in California were instructed in running interference. Just as U.S. attorney Michael Fitzhugh was stonewalling the investigations by Russell Welch, Bill Duncan, and a grand jury in Arkansas.

But that is not all. As the head of the Criminal Division, Weld was part of all the sinister plots hatched in a Justice Department run amok: he wrote a February 29, 1988 memo declining a preliminary investigation of the Inslaw affair "due to lack of evidence of criminality." Congress later concluded otherwise.

Already as U.S. attorney in Boston in 1985, Weld had shown his value to drug networks. He failed to vigorously pursue evidence that the Bank of Boston had participated in money laundering in the amount of $1.2 billion.

It does serve to Weld's credit, however, that he resigned as Assistant Attorney General in 1988, protesting Attorney General Ed Meese's political use of the agency.

So what may appear on the surface to be a gesture by Bill Clinton to include Republicans in his administration, is more likely the shadows a bipartisan network of political corruption, a network that was in its formative years during Iran-Contra when Weld was at Justice and Clinton was in Mena, Arkansas. But the connection goes back even before that. It started back in 1974, where Bill Weld and Hillary Clinton served on the temporary staff of the Watergate Committee together with Richard Ben-Veniste, later the lawyer for drug smuggler and covert operative Barry Seal.

Interestingly, Jerome Zeifman, permanent counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during the Watergate proceedings, claims that Watergate counsel John Doar and his entourage, including Weld, Nussbaum and Clinton, were brought in not so much to defeat Nixon but to prevent the exposure of other government crimes--crimes committed in the name of national security.

Weld's nomination is the more troubling, coming as it does right after the appointment of Barry McCaffrey to U.S. drug Czar. McCaffrey looked the other way when U.S. counter-narcotics funds were diverted to death squads in Colombia, and he called the Mexican drug czar "incorruptible" and of "unquestioned integrity" months before he was indicted on massive drug corruption.

So a suspicious mind would conclude that the Clinton Administration has another agenda besides "bipartisanhip" in Mexico. And that agenda is to protect the drug trade.

18. The CLASSIC Question: Anyone believe Poppy Bush woke up one day in Jan1993 and decided to STOP
running drugs, dealing illegal arms, and spreading nuclear material to his global networks just BECAUSE he was no longer in the White House?

And....how was he able to continue doing it without the protection of his successor?

25. That investigator Russell Welch was poisoned with anthrax.
...This may not be the first time anthrax has been used to silence critics. Russell Welch, an investigator for the Arkansas State Police who had been trying to blow the whistle a dozen years ago on the massive CIA cocaine smuggling operation in Mena, Arkansas. Russell Welch was exposed to weaponized anthrax over a decade ago when he opened a letter, and his life was saved only after prompt diagnosis by his doctor. Later his doctor's office was burglarized, and test results and correspondence with Center for Disease Control officials in Atlanta were stolen....

32. Amazing that even Dems want to remain blind to Bush's operations here just because
they know there are Dems who have abetted these operations and covered them up when necessary.

And then they have the nerve to complain about Bush2, as if he was just sprung on them from out of nowhere.

79. And then we wonder why the dems don't SCREAM about hackable voting machines.
They have to keep "their own kind" in office, or someone might blow the lid off the whole thing. No wonder they didn't want Kerry to get the white house in 2004. I think he had engaged John Edwards .... both of them brilliant attorneys... just in the hopes that they might have a shot at cleaning things up.

I dont see either one as having the balls to do any more than they had already done. Unless Kerry took Bob Perry to the bathroom where the smoking gun was on the October Surprise.
I think Kerry is guilty of aiding and abetting the coverup, just as surely as he could have blown it wide open at the time.

In fact, I dont see Edwards as being anything positive in any measure, just a cheap lying politician who will
help install Hillary.

106. Not true. Kerry covered up NOTHING. What he didn't have to use was classified documents
that he had TRIED to get released and only by getting into the oval office himself could he have pieced it all together for the public by allowing investigators and reporters the access he tried to get them before.

You must not be aware how often Kerry took Reagan and Bush administrations to court throughout that time.

Do you even realize that the ONLY reason we even know about the Aug 6, 2001 briefing paper is because of Kerry's efforts taking Bush1 to court for what documents can be released to public?

I think you made some bad assumptions about Kerry and are sticking with them because you aren't familiar with the fuller pictures and the details.

LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS RELATING TO THE WAR IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 1971

UNITED STATES SENATE;
COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN RELATIONS,
Washington, D.C.

The committee met, pursuant to notice, at 11:05 a.m., in Room 4221, New Senate Office Building, Senator J. W. Fulbright (Chairman) presiding.

Present: Senators Fulbright, Symington, Pell, Aiken, Case, and Javits.

The CHAIRMAN. The committee will come to order.

OPENING STATEMENT

The committee is continuing this morning its hearings on proposals relating to the ending of the war in Southeast Asia. This morning the committee will hear testimony from Mr. John Kerry and, if he has any associates, we will be glad to hear from them. These are men who have fought in this unfortunate war in Vietnam. I believe they deserve to be heard and listened to by the Congress and by the officials in the executive, branch and by the public generally. You have a perspective that those in the Government who make our Nation's policy do not always have and I am sure that your testimony today will be helpful to the committee in its consideration of the proposals before us.

I would like to add simply on my own account that I regret very much the action of the Supreme Court in denying the veterans the right to use the Mall.

I regret that. It seems to me to be but another instance of an insensitivity of our Government to the tragic effects of this war upon our people.

I want also to congratulate Mr. Kerry, you, and your associates upon the restraint that you have shown, certainly in the hearing the other day when there were a great many of your people here. I think you conducted yourselves in a most commendable manner throughout this week. Whenever people gather there is always a tendency for some of the more emotional ones to do things which, are even against their own interests. I think you deserve much of the credit because I understand you are one of the leaders of this group.

I have joined with some of my colleagues, specifically Senator Hart, in an effort to try to change the attitude of our Government toward your efforts in bringing to this committee and to the country your views about the war.

I personally don't know of any group which would have both a greater justification for doing it and also a more accurate view of the effect of the war. As you know, there has grown up in this town a feeling that it is extremely difficult to get accurate information about the war and I don't know a better source than you and your associates. So we are very pleased to have you and your associates, Mr. Kerry.

At the beginning if you would give to the reporter your fUll name and a brief biography so that the record will show who you are.

Senator JAVITS. Mr. Chairman, I was down there to the veterans' camp yesterday and saw the New York group and I would like to say I am very proud of the deportment and general attitude of the group.

I hope it continues. I have joined in the Hart resolution, too. As a lawyer I hope you will find it possible to comply with the order even though, like the chairman, I am unhappy about it. I think it is our job to see that you are suitably set up as an alternative so that you can do what you came here to do. I welcome the fact that you came and what you are doing.

The CHAIRMAN. You may proceed, Mr.Kerry.

STATEMENT OF JOHN KERRY, VIETNAM VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR

102. So now when I post that Hillary had phoned Edwards the morning after
The November 2004 election and told him to quit his grandstanding about the stolen voting and the need for every vote to count, now the motive is not just that she wanted a shot for the Presidency in 2008, but also she wanted to keep a lid on it.

37. Indira Singh and PTECH....
In her testimony before a Congressional committee:

http://www.justicefor911.org/September-Hearings.doc

page 121:

around 9/11 I was doing work on Wall Street for a large bank <JP Morgan Chase> and in DC for a DARPA lab which in a sense advanced research, project agency for project affairs. Therefore, I have connections deep within the government and at high levels in the banking community.

...

page 122:

On the morning of September the 11th I was supposed to be on the 106th floor of the World Trade Center at a risk <technology> conference that a company by the name of Risk Waters was putting on.

...

page 123:

At JP Morgan I was working on the next generation risk blueprint which is all about how to prevent these things from happening, bad business practice such as money laundering, rogue trading, and massive computer failures, anything you could imagine would go wrong.

...

page 124:

it would be a surveillance software that would look at trading patterns that indicated someone was up to no good and then do something about it, send a message somewhere, send a transaction information somewhere, perhaps shut their system down, perhaps shut another system down, perhaps start something up elsewhere.... My buddies recommeded Ptech. And my buddies in JP Morgan were also evaluating Ptech. And why not Ptech? What you see on the screen is a list, is a very prestigious list of Ptech's clients....I figured there's be no problem getting them cleared to come into JP Morgan Chase, to evaluate our very confidential risk plans for the future, how we would stop money laundering, for instance.

page 125-126:

Agent Wright said his investigation into the founders and financiers of Ptech and their financing shell, something called BMI, was also shut down. BMI stands for..."Bait ul Mal" which later turned out to be a front for Hamas and al Qaeda...the people who started BMI are exactly the same who started Ptech...there were 17 names linked to terror. The glaring question was why wasn't Ptech shut down?...did the FBI not get it?

page 127:

As a consolation prize as I left his office he told me the FBI at the highest level had validated the entire story as I laid it out.

page 128-129:

I looked out the window to ground zero and back at him and I asked him if this is about Saudi money flowing through the bank. He turned his eyes away and said, "We've made a lot of mistakes."...They were going to air the Ptech story nationwide and the lead story in the first year anniversary of 9/11 with me in the story. There were many other networks that had gotten wind of it and all the networks were going to run the Ptech story on the first year anniversary. However, the White House got wind of the investigation - I have proof of that - and shut the story down in late August.

page 129:

I did a number of things in my research and when I ran into the drugs I was told that if I mentioned the money to the drugs around 9/11 that would be the end of me. That is a current threat that I'm under and therefore I will speak out about the drugs at another forum.

page 129-130:

I did not expect the Kean Commission to go anywhere near the FBI and Ptech. But I hope all Americans will demand answers reagrding the FBI and Ptech. I would like to leave you with this one question. Not only why is Ptech still operating but why did Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Chertoff state they cannot differentiate between terrorism, organized crime and drug dealing and is that the reason the Kean Commission will not make terrorism financing a priority in the future?

page 133:

Now I understand Cynthia's questions. Who's really behind PTECH is the question. I asked that of many intelligence people who came to my aid as I was being blacklisted and I was told, "Indira, it is a CIA clandestine op on the level of Iran-Contra." And I have reason to believe this because Care International that was mentioned in one of the slides is a renamed version of Alkhifah which was the funding arm for WTC '93. Prior to Alkhifah it was called Maktab Al-Khidamat, which is funding arm for Afghani Mujahideen. It was how monies got to Osama bin Laden through the Pakistani ISI....At that level I said, well why doesn't the FBI take advantage of their celebrated differences with the CIA and I was told because at that level they work together.

page 134:

Joe Bergantino when Ptech fell into his lap, they paid for private investigators to follow a couple of the Ptech people and it did go to a mob run warehouse area. And the reports came back that, that basically it was a drop shipment place for drugs. That was turned over to the Boston FBI. Two weeks ago Jeo told, you know, what do you do in this country when all this information's source data documents going to a big black hole in the FBI.

page 138:

I stumbled into the drugs for weapons deals. This is not different than Iran-Contra. In fact the same names that were around there are affiliated with Ptech. The same illegal clandestines are affiliated behind the scenes with Ptech.

page 139:

Question: Is there a connection between this software and the old INSLAW software?

Indira Singh:

The old INSLAW is PROMIS. Ptech is actually a more sophisticated version. It's a place in - Ptech at its heart is, is software that builds other software with such capability so it's a more agile, adaptable version of it.

page 141:

Question: ...is there any links in your investigation of Ptech, the investigations of Ellen Mariani, Bank of Credit and Commerce, which has also been under investigation for 10 years I believe for drug operations?

Indira Singh: ....Yes, it was a CIA clandestine operation...

Question: Is there a linkage to Carlyle?

Indira Singh: Absolutely. And to think the saddest thing about Carlyle is watch their, their offshore Cayman Island shells that they're setting up now with other middle eastern countries. In other words, folks, the same thing is still going on. The terror economy is alive and well, being exploited against us.

45. Rep. Jack BROOKS (D-Texas) Investigated the INSLAW/Promis affair...

Jack Brooks was virtually alone investigating these turds.

Oh yeah. Daniel Casolaro was investigating the INSLAW / Promis affair, too.

A Primer on INSLAW

This primer has been collated and provided as a courtesy by Brian Wright. (Thank you.)

NEWS RELEASE
August 11, 1992
U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on the Judiciary

Jack Brooks, Texas, Chairman

JUDICIARY COMMITTEE REPORT CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT COUNSEL TO INVESTIGATE THE INSLAW CONTROVERSY

The ("INSLAW Affair") report concludes that there appears to be strong evidence, as indicated by the findings of two Federal court proceedings, as well as by the Committee investigation, that the Department of Justice "acted willfully and fraudulently," and "took, converted and stole," INSLAW's Enhanced PROMIS by "trickery, fraud and deceit." The report finds that these actions against INSLAW were implemented through the Project Manager from the beginning of the contract and under the direction of high-level Justice Department officials. The evidence presented in the report demonstrates that high-level Department officials deliberately ignored INSLAW's proprietary rights and misappropriated its PROMIS software for use at locations not covered under contract with the company. Justice then proceeded to challenge INSLAW's claims in court even though its own internal deliberations had concluded that these claims were valid and that the Department would most likely lose in court on this issue.

According to the report, the second phase of the Committee's investigation concentrated on the allegations that high-level officials at the Department of Justice conspired to drive INSLAW into insolvency and steal PROMIS. In this regard, the report states that several individuals testified under oath that INSLAW's PROMIS software was stolen and distributed internationally in order to provide financial gain to associates of Justice Department officials and to further intelligence and foreign policy objectives of the United States. Additional corroborating evidence was uncovered by the Committee which substantiated to varying degrees the information provided by these individuals.

(Chairman) Brooks stated, "Although (the Department of Justice was) faced with a growing body of evidence that serious wrongdoing had occurred which reached to the highest levels of the Department, both Attorney General Meese and Thornburgh ignored these findings of two Federal courts and refused to seek the appointment of an Independent Counsel."

"Summer Of the Octopus"

WASHINGTON POST
by Mary McGrory
August 18, 1991

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Danny Casolaro) had been investigating the Inslaw case, a tangled affair of government perfidy and international intrigue that has been in litigation since 1983. In his explorations, he found out about possibly related scandals -- BCCI, S&Ls, Iran-contra, the "October surprise" -- but until two weeks ago, he had found nothing about Inslaw. Then, he joyfully told friends, he hit bingo. One more interview and the case was cracked.
Suicides do not tell their intimates within days of taking the hemlock that they are "ecstatic" or "euphoric." Casolaro did. Nor do they attend family birthday parties, as Danny Casolaro was planning to do hours before he died. The last known call was to his mother in Fairfax (VA). He told her he was on Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania. He would be late, but he was headed home. A manic-depressive might then kill himself. Nobody ever suggested Danny Casolaro was one.

Although the case involves the alleged theft of computer software by the Justice Department in the time of Ed Meese, Thornburgh took it to his bosom. Bill Hamilton, a perfectly nice midwesterner who owned a Washington firm called Inslaw, had invented Promis, a software especially adapted to crime statistics, which he sold to Justice. The second year, Justice stopped making payments. Hamilton and his wife, Nancy, believe that cronies of Meese were given the franchise to sell around the world. Promis has turned up in Canada and Pakistan. Thelink with the "October surprise" is Earl Brian, a former Reagan political associate who allegedly paid off Iranians to keep the hostages until after the 1980 election -- and allegedly was paid off himself with huge profits from Promis.

"The Inslaw Octopus"

But the real power of PROMIS, according to Hamilton, is that with a staggering 570,000 lines of computer code, PROMIS can integrate innumerable databases without requiring any reprogramming. In essence, PROMIS can turn blind data into information. And anyone in government will tell you that information, when wielded with finesse, begets power. Converted to use by intelligence agencies, as has been alleged in interviews by ex-CIA and Israeli Mossad agents, PROMIS can be a powerful tracking device capable of monitoring intelligence operations, agents and targets, instead of legal cases.

Apparently, Israel was not the only country interested in using PROMIS for internal security purposes, Lt. Col. Oliver North also may have been using the program. According to several intelligence community sources, PROMIS was in use at a 6,100 square-foot command center built on the sixth floor of the Justice Department. According to both a contractor who helped design the center and information disclosed during the Iran-contra hearings, Oliver North had a similar, but smaller, White House operations room that was connected by computer link to the DOJ's command center,

Using the computers in the command center, North tracked dissidents and potential troublemakers within the United States as part of a domestic emergency preparedness program, commissioned under Reagan's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), according to sources and published reports. Using PROMIS, sources point out, North could have drawn up lists of anyone ever arrested for a political protest, for example, or anyone who had ever refused to pay their taxes. Compared to PROMIS, Richard Nixon's enemies lists or Sen. Joe McCarthy's blacklist look downright crude. The operation was so sensitive that when Rep. Jack Brooks asked North about it during the Iran-contra hearings, the hearing was immediately suspended pending an executive (secret) conference. When the hearings were reconvened, the issue of North's FEMA dealings was dropped.

Freelance reporter Danny Casolaro spent the last few years of his life investigating a pattern which he called "The Octopus." According to Casolaro, Inslaw was only part of a greater story of how intelligence agencies, the Department of Justice and even the mob had subverted the government and its various functions for their own profit.

"The Dirtiest Bank of All"

by Jonathan Beaty and S.C. Gwynne
TIME
July 29, 1991

The more conventional departments of B.C.C.I. (Bank of Credit and Commerce International) handled such services as laundering money for the drug trade and helping dictators loot their national treasuries. The black network, which is still functioning, operates a lucrative arms-trade business and transports drugs and gold. According to investigators and participants in those operations, it often works with Western and Middle Eastern intelligence agencies. The strange and still murky ties between B.C.C.I. and the intelligence agencies of several countries are so pervasive that even the White House has become entangled. As TIME reported earlier this month, the National Security Council used B.C.C.I. to funnel money for the Iran-contra deals, and the CIA maintained accounts in B.C.C.I. for covert operations. Moreover, investigators have told TIME that the Defense Intelligence Agency has maintained a slush-fund account with B.C.C.I. apparently to pay for clandestine activities.
But the CIA may have used B.C.C.I. as more than an undercover banker: U.S. agents collaborated with the black network in several operations, according to a B.C.C.I. black-network "officer" who is now a secret U.S. government witness. Sources have told investigators that B.C.C.I. worked closely with Israel's spy agencies and other Western intelligence groups as well, especially in arms deals.

Much like Charlie Wilson from an adjacent district, Brooks was also a rabble rouser who was less than perfect and would not have succeeded in modern day politics. It's a shame we didn't listen to them both in the 80s.

I searched for a video or even transcript of the hearing in which Brooks called North a crook, but could not find one.

81. One reason might be....
An Arksansas company called Systematics may have implemented a back door into Promis software which aided drug/arms money laundering. This could have been because of the $multi-billion dollar Iran-Contra operation out of Mena airport. The legal team of Hillary Rodham and Vince Foster represented Systematics. Systematics software and services were allegedly implemented in numerous banks...could it also have been utilized in a number of Savings & Loans?

76. When it comes to sophisticated spy software and how seemingly unrelated
subjects often come together when discussing the BFEE's components here is an archived thread from when the Mark Foley "scandal" broke just prior to the midterm 2006 elections.

In the OP I introduce the individual that originated Database Technologies/DBT that morphed into other organizations and software programs like ChoicePoint, Seisint, MATRIX. He was a "former" drug pilot operating from around Naples Florida, he "became a good guy" for the FBI and he came up with the algorithms for many of these software programs-he, Hank Asher (and some of his associates) were/are involved with the Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

<die-hard Democrats cover your eyes for this post>

http://emptv.com/promis.php

...

In late 1996 Tyree mailed me a detailed set of diagrams and a lengthy narrative explaining the exact hows and whys of the murder of Danny Casolaro and an overall view of the Promis saga that is not only consistent with what is described by Seymour in The Last Circle but also provides many new details. Asked about Mike Riconosciuto for this story Tyree would say only that, "He's very good at what he does. There are very, very few who can touch him, maybe 200 in the whole world. Riconosciuto's in a class all by himself." Those documents, as later described to me by RCMP Investigator Sean McDade, proved to be "Awesome and right on the money."

The essence of those documents was that, not only had the Republicans under Meese exploited the software, but that the Democrats had also seen its potential and moved years earlier. Nowhere was this connection more clearly exposed than in understanding the relationship between three classmates from the U.S. Naval Academy: Jimmy Carter, Stansfield Turner (Carter's CIA director), and billionaire banker and Presidential kingmaker (Carter's Annapolis roommate), Arkansas' Jackson Stephens. The Tyree diagrams laid out in detail how Promis, after improvement with AI, had allegedly been mated with the software of Jackson Stephens' firm Systematics. In the late seventies and early eighties, Systematics handled some 60-70% of all electronic banking transactions in the U.S. The goal, according to the diagrams which laid out (subsequently verified) relationships between Stephens, Worthen Bank, the Lippo Group and the drug/intelligence bank BCCI was to penetrate every banking system in the world. This "cabal" could then use Promis both to predict and to influence the movement of financial markets worldwide. Stephens, truly bipartisan in his approach to profits, has been a lifelong supporter of George Bush and he was, at the same time, the source of the $3 million loan that rescued a faltering Clinton Campaign in early 1992. There is a great photograph of Stephens with a younger George "W" Bush in the excellent BCCI history, False Profits.

In the fall of 1997, Bill McCoy, having recently gone off of his heart medication was found dead in his favorite chair. In the days and weeks before he had been advised by Tyree that a Pakistani hit man, on an Israeli contract had been in the states seeking to fulfill a hit on McCoy. There had been other hints that someone closer to McCoy might do the job. Tyree recently told FTW that just before his death, he had given McCoy information on "Elbit" flash memory chips, allegedly designed at Kir Yat-Gat south of Tel Aviv. The unique feature of the Elbit chips was that they worked on ambient electricity in a computer. In other words, they worked when the computer was turned off. When combined with another newly developed chip, the "Petrie," which was capable of storing up to six months worth of key strokes, it was now possible to burst transmit all of a computer's activity in the middle of the night to a nearby receiver - say in a passing truck or even a low flying SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) satellite. According to Tyree this was the methodology used by Jonathan Pollard and the Israeli Mossad to compromise many foreign embassies in Washington.

It all starts to come together.

134. Thanks again!
<http://www.ourmedia.org/node/107384>
Reported by Cheryl Shuman:

McDade continued with this scenario by telling the astonished group: “The Israeli Mossad may have modified the original PROMIS modification so it became a two-way back door, allowing the Israelis access to top U.S. weapons secrets at Los Alamos and other classified installations. The Israelis may now possess all the nuclear secrets of the United States.? According to Seymour, he concluded by saying that “the Jonathan Pollard case is insignificant by comparison to the current crisis.? This was pretty heavy stuff for a foreign law-enforcement agent to be bandying with complete strangers. And it made those present uncomfortable.

..

And the Mounties also were interested in claims Riconosciuto has made about his participation in a DEA drug-sting operation in Cyprus. In one of the taped interviews Riconosciuto had with the FBI agent, he says that he was in Lebanon working on “communications protocol? for FIDCO in the Middle East to rebuild the infrastructure of two cities in Lebanon. Why the RCMP would be interested in this additional twist in the intrigue is unknown, but Insight has obtained documents that support the convicted felon’s claims here as well.

...

Lester Coleman, a former contract employee with the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) who was on loan to the DEA in the late 1980s, wrote a book in 1993 called Trail of the Octopus: From Beirut to Lockerbie, Inside the DIA. Coleman claims there to have worked out of a safe house in Cyprus at the same location Riconosciuto described and under the same name, Eurame Trading Ltd. Coleman also confirmed secret Bekáa Valley drug shipments and the names of the U.S. agents working undercover in Cyprus that Riconosciuto had revealed to the FBI in 1992 — a year before it was outlined in Coleman’s book.

160. How the mafiya connection took root between Israel and the former Soviet states...
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 04:08 AM by AntiFascist
In that time, he <Maxwell> had free access to Margaret Thatcher's Downing Street, to Ronald Reagan's White House, to the Kremlin and to the corridors of power throughout Europe.

On top of that he had built himself a position of power within the crime families of eastern Europe, teaching them how to funnel their vast wealth from drugs, arms smuggling and prostitution to banks in safe havens around the globe.

MAXWELL passed on all the secrets he learned to Mossad in Tel Aviv. In turn, they tolerated his excesses, vanities and insatiable appetite for a luxurious lifestyle and women. He told his controllers who they should target and how they should do it. He appointed himself as Israel's unofficial ambassador to the Soviet Bloc. Mossad saw the advantage in that.Having learned many of the key secrets of the Soviet empire, Maxwell was given his greatest chance to be a super spy.Mossad had stolen from America the most important piece of software in the US arsenal. Maxwell was given the job of marketing the stolen software, called Promis.Mossad had reconstructed the software and inserted into it a device which enabled them to track the use any purchaser made of the it. Sitting in Israel, Mossad would know exactly what was going on inside all the intelligence services that bought it. In all, Maxwell sold it to 42 countries, including China and Soviet Bloc nations. But his greatest triumph was selling it to Los Alamos, the very heart of the US nuclear defence system.

161. Take a look at the latest develoopments in the Sibel Edmonds case...

this seems to be tied in with the allegations of sharing nuclear technology via Pakistan:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3179368&mesg_id=3179470

Q: Is it correct that US officials sold nuclear secrets not only to Pakistan but also to Israel and some Arab countries?

A: Of course, they did. The main recipient of the most of the US nuclear information was always Israel, specifically after the capture, sentencing and jailing of their main spy in the USA. Jonathan Pollard, whose handler was a former top Israeli intelligence officer Rafi Eitan (now member of the Israeli government and chairman of the Pensioners Party).

126. They should....but they won't. They need their blind faith in Clintons to protect them
from seeing and knowing what has been going on in their name for decades now.

130. Denial is what keeps the whole circus going. It's the most powerful force in American politics.
But of course, most partisans will deny that this is so.

142. here's another interesting article I came across
It gives a fairly simple explanation of the theft. The one thing I find incredably surprising about it thought..... is the author... wait... are you ready for it? Michelle Malkin.

Malkin is a graduate of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. She lives with her husband in North Bethesda, Md.

snip:This complex, tangled story began two decades ago, when a tiny private company called Inslaw Inc. developed a software package to help U.S. attorneys’ offices in large urban districts keep tabs on their criminal prosecutors’ caseloads. The program, dubbed the Prosecutor’s Management Information System (PROMIS), was effective and popular. It allowed a prosecutor to locate defendants and witnesses, track motions and monitor ongoing investigations. In 1982, Inslaw won a large Justice Department contract to implement the system nationwide.

In the meantime, Inslaw also developed privately owned enhancements to PROMIS. Despite contractural guarantees of Inslaw’s proprietary rights to the enhanced version of PROMIS, the Justice Department essentially commandeered the improved program for its own uses without paying for it. Inslaw was forced into bankruptcy and began an endless fight with the Justice Department to recoup its losses.

In the course of their court battles, Inslaw founder Bill Hamilton and his wife innocently stumbled upon shocking national security revelations. Former Attorney General Ed Meese, the Hamiltons concluded, had conspired to force Inslaw into bankruptcy so that an old Meese crony, California businessman Earl Brian, could take over the company’s assets. The Hamilton’s obtained information through sworn affidavits of several individuals that suggested Meese, Brian, high-ranking Justice Department official Peter Videnieke and others wanted to modify and distribute the enhanced PROMIS software with ‘back-door’ capabilities for covert intelligence operations.

Sound preposterous?

In 1987, a federal judge blasted the Justice Department for stealing PROMIS. The government, Judge George Bason said, stole Inslaw’s software through “trickery, fraud, and deceit” with contempt for both the law and any principle of fair dealing.” The House Judiciary Committee also found in 1992 that there was “strong evidence” the Justice Department had conspired to steal the PROMIS program. An internal Justice Department memo made public by the committee revealed that the Justice Department had secretly turned over a copy of PROMIS to the Israeli government.

149. "The discovery that bin Laden had the software created havoc within
the global intelligence community. The FBI, MI5 and MI6 and Germany's BND were among the agencies that stopped using their version of Promis- fearing bin Laden had already used his version to access their own hard drives."

144. and the plot thickens...
I believe it was the Reagan-era CIA which came up with the phrase "follow the money" in terms of tracking down foreign enemies. What happens if a system is developed, in conjunction with crime-fighting databases, which allows for cash flow to be covered up when illegal transactions occur such as in drug money laundering, or selling government secrets, or simply emptying bank accounts in order to support covert "black" operations? Could this be where government intelligence, organized crime, corrupt business, and perhaps even terrorist activities converge?

You may find that PROMIS software, or one of its variants, lies at the root many scandals and events, from the Pollard spy case to Iran-Contra, 9-11, and even the S&L scandals! Take a look at this list of S&L, organized crime, and CIA connections and see if it doesn't sound legitimate:

http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/CIA/S&L_Scandal_CIA.html

Mario Renda, Lender to the Mob: Mario Renda was a Long Island money broker who brokered deposits to various savings and loans in return for their agreement to loan money to phony companies (Brewton, 1993: 45-47; 188-190; Pizzo et al. 1989: 466-471). Renda and his associates received finders fees of 2 to 6 percent on the loans, most of which went to individuals with strong organized crime connections who subsequently defaulted on them. Renda brokered deals to 160 Savings and Loans throughout the country, 104 of which eventually failed. Renda was convicted of $16 million from an S & L and for tax fraud.

Renda also served CIA and National Security Council interests as a money broker helping arrange for the laundering of drug money through various savings and loans on behalf of the CIA. He then obtained loans from the same S & L's, which were funneled to the Contras. An organized crime-related stockbroker, a drug pilot, and Renda were all convicted in the drug money laundering case.

Full-Service Banking: All told at least twenty-two of the failed S & L's can be tied to joint money laundering ventures by the CIA and organized crime figures (Glassman, 1990: 16-21; Farnham, 1990: 90-108; Weinberg, 1990: 33; Pizzo, et al., 1989: 466-471). If the savings and loan scandals of the 1980s reveal anything, they demonstrate what has often been stated as a maxim in organized crime research: that corruption linking government, business, and syndicates is the reality of the day-to-day organization of crime. Investigations of organized crime in the United States, Europe, and Asia have all uncovered organized crime networks operating with virtual immunity from law enforcement and prosecution. Chambliss' study of organized crime in Seattle exposed a syndicate that involved participation by a former governor of the state, the county prosecutor, the police chief, the sheriff, at least 50 law enforcement officers, leading business people, including contractors, realtors, banks, and corporation executives, and, of course, a supporting cast of drug pushers, pimps, gamblers, and racketeers (Chambliss, 1978). The Chambliss study is not the exception but the rule. Other sociological inquires in Detroit, Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York have all revealed similar patterns (Albini, 1971; Block, 1984; Block and Chambliss, 1981; Block and Scarpitti,1985; Jenkins and Potter, 1989; 1986; Potter and Jenkins, 1985; Potter, 1994).

165. There may be hope...

I recall several years ago being chewed out by Wayne Madsen (no less) for the mere suggestion that the Clintons should be investigated along with the BFEE. Now, one of the latest reports from his website has to do with Hillary's involvement in illegally trafficking arms to Iraq.
