"I know what I know."
That was the parting remark from my landlord. He'd come by to restart my furnace, and on the way out noticed the materials, both Hillary and Obama, that I'd brought home from the caucus. And I was listening to Hillary's Tacoma event. Anyway, he says he hopes that "she gets the nomination, because I hate the idea of a Muslim in the White House!" Now, I've gotten 'that' email more times than I care to think about, so I've pretty much got the response loaded and ready to fire. So, we stood there for 15 minutes or so while I refuted, with citations, every point he brought up. But he just kept shaking his head. As he was heading out the door, he again asserted that "Nope, he's a Muslim," followed by "I know what I know."

This is a guy who owns millions of dollars worth of real estate. He's a contractor, owns his own construction company. Yet, this is how he thinks. And there is just so damn much of that kind of non-thinking thinking! How in the heck can we expect any semblance of reasonable, effective conversation with such people? Even worse, it used to be possible to escape that kind of numbskullery for a while by dropping into DU for some home team civility. Used to be.

So. Anybody know where I can get a brick wall made out of foam rubber? My head's starting to hurt from banging it against the real thing. . .

4. Don't confuse me with facts, my mind is made up.
Pretty sad commentary in this day and age, but i hear it as well. Perhaps we're getting to much information, good and bad and people get lazy.

Peace!

5. I have said here, again and again...
These people are not working out of the cerebral cortex. They are operating from the reptilian brain, that part that deals with fight or flight...with primitive survival mechanisims.

It's not about facts or logic. It's about primitive responses. And the only way to change it would be some sort of re-programming.

8. when the fundamentalist Muslims & Christians
get together-look out! Will there be a coherent effort to resist & thwart them then? How do you reject-politely-someone who claims to be a god-fearing person? How do you resist those who want to live like it's 1A.D.? Of course you will be called evil, but how do you get the majority of the people to side with less religion in public life, you know, like it's 1776, or how they did in the 18thC?

10. I had a conversation with an acquaintance at work the other day...
who is a big Huckabee supporter and he asked who I was supporting and I said Obama, although I have not made up my mind as of yet, and he said, "He's a Muslim, you know...He went to school at those madrasas." I said "No, he's not a Muslim but many people believe the things they hear."

11. Ya know, this scares me.
I'm supporting Obama in the primaries. But I'm scared that this kind of shit from ignorant morons will cost him the general election. I hope there are enough intelligent, educated voters to prevent that.

12. Hey, I know a guy with a super-demanding job as a pro statistician
and an MA in math (I think), who was surprised that Turks and Arabs don't get along because, "they're all Muslims". My analogy of "that's like saying 'France and Britain couldn't have fought for 800 years, after all they're both Christian countries" fell flat. Sometimes there's a gap between knowledge and understanding, I guess.
