The conservative movement is nearly finished
going through the bowels of the Republican party.

It was a painfully slow movement that started with Reagan.

it was accompanied by the sonorous thunder of Buchanan, Limbaugh and Coulter,

and it will end appropriately with a perfect asswipe, George W. Bush.

A repeat, but worth repeating.

19. I hate to say it, but that's a little shortsighted
to paraphrase the words attributed to J.C., the selfish will always be with us.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

28. Sadly I have to disagree....
Politics is cyclical. Yes we are seeing a swing to the left now.......and I firmly believe a Democrat will be in the WH come 2009. BUT........nothing is forever.

America swings left for a few years and then it swings right. I think the best we can hope for is that we can keep a Democrat in the WH for the next 8 years at least and possibly 12 years at best.

51. It's simple, but let me spell it out
The "conservative movement" is almost finished going through the "Republican Party".

The "conservative movement" is independent of the "Republican party". This became obvious when Limbaugh attacked McCain because he is not conservative enough. Limbaugh is loyal to the "conservative movement", not the "Republican party"

Republican and Democratic are political parties, not movements.

Hope this helps.

Edited on Sun Feb-10-08 03:46 PM by Jennicut
Or at least on life support. The idea that we can take Democracy and transfer it to the rest of the world turned out to be a crock. Yeah, the surge is "supposedly" working but only because we decided to let some of the most extreme leaders in Iraq take over certain areas. Its not bloody civil war but it is oppression on both sides (Shiite and Sunni). Certainly not the shiny beacon of democracy in action in a foreign world. It simply was not and will never be possible. They never learned from Vietnam. Neoconservatives failed. Are Iraqis really all that better with their new "democracy" then they were under a burned out and increasingly crazy dictator like Saddam? I'm surprised McCain does not understand this as he was never a neoconservative. Conservatives like Bob Dole and the like will always be here. They want lower taxes and smaller government. Enough people in the U.S. will continue to support that idea. But big spending/ big government Rethugs are gone and dead. It never fit with their party anyways. McCain has taken up the failed neoconservative cause and I think he will loose in the GE because of that.

37. Capitalists and sadists are behind Reagan, Limbaugh and Bush.
(I know little about Coulter, and let's just leave it that way.)

They've merely used a convenient political party to turn their desires into laws. Which can, in the worst possible case, be used as the basis of force. Well, we may have seen that already in the process of how they managed to invade Iraq, to further their domination and greed. If they continue regarding the elimination of our personal rights, using their great lever, terrorism, this will certainly happen here as well.

Things can get a whole lot worse than they already are. Especially if these problems are not dealt with now. Please demand your Democratic candidate to support immediate impeachment and prosecution, renouncing of corporate person hood laws, and the immediate ending of the Iraq treasure bath. Election reform and bringing the MSM into public control as well. THEN we can begin to create health care, infrastructure, etc.

38. Not in the least.
They're simply taking a few years off to rebrand their bullshit, letting the field lie fallow, if you will, until the day that America can afford their mad spending sprees again.

Big Money still rules us, and the conservatives are almost always better at sucking up to it. Until we dethrone the money, the conservatives will always be reinstalled. In the meantime, enjoy an Administration or two of somewhat less-blatant corporatism, and tell yourself that things really have changed.

59. Ah. We should distinguish between the rank-and-file conservatives...
...and the uber-capitalists in charge. The former may certainly be pissed, but that won't mean much; they'll find or invent replacements for their idols. The latter are already busy buying off our Democrats, and little, if anything, will be allowed to change.

The conservative movement doesn't depend on the Republicans running the show, after all--that just made things easier. Conservatism will march on, secure in near-total control of the media and all three branches of government.

54. Do not surrender
Do not surrender even when defeated,
and do not be a slave even in bondage,
trembling with fear advance bravely,
and attack with fury, though badly wounded.

Be as stubborn as a rusting nail,
that refuses to yield though old and ruined,
and do not envy the peacock's plumage,
that drops in fear at the first noise.

Be as a god that never cries,
or as a devil that never prays,
or as the oak whose mighty canopy,
needs of water but does not beg it.

Even when it rolls to the dust,
let your head scowl and bite,
and scream for vengeance.

- Pedro Palacios Almafuerte
Argentinian poet 1854-1917

Believe it or not, this is my mother's favorite poem.
She is my guiding light.
