1. Voted for BABEL, although I expect Scorsese to take the Oscar home tonight.
BABEL reached for more than the other 4 nominated films, without quite getting all its fingers firmly on the golden ring.

If THE DEPARTED is too grizzly for Academy voters, they might opt for THE QUEEN. Not a bad script at all.

2. "Little Miss Sunshine" gets my vote
I found it charming and quriky as well as very funny. "The Departed" and "Babel" were not to my taste, though well-acted and produced. I don't enjoy leaving a theatre feeling depressed and upset (yes, I am shallow). I haven't seen the other two, but I hope Helen Mirren gets the Best Actress Oscar. I'm a huge fan of hers!

4. I am also a big fan of Helen Mirren and hope she wins....
I loved her in the "Prime Suspect" series. She gives A+ performances in anything she does.

7. I thought she was robbed of the Best Supporting Actress
Oscar for "Gosford Park." Maybe she'll make up for it tonight.

5. I thought Little Miss Sunshine had a wonderful message in it too
You had this nutty family and they were all trying to be "winners" in todays society and one by one each of their dreams was falling apart and the success of the family hinged on the Little Miss Sunshine contest. When that fell through you saw the families true colors and the true beauty they possessed when they stood up for the little girl in that disgusting beauty pageant, where all the little girls looked like plastic Barbie Dolls.

It was a truly touching movie and I was rolling on the floor when the tattooed guy got up and screamed:

YAHHHHHHHHHH! :woohoo:

It had a lot of depth and beauty! A wonderful film!

6. I don't think i can vote, since I've only seen 1 of the films,
but I'm so glad Little Miss Sunshine was nominated. I can't remember the last time a nominated film was one that I left the theater thinking "I can't wait to see this again".

9. Scorsese should get the Director's award but not BP. I hope it's 'LMS'
but it seems films like 'Babel' get the big one.

10. Normally, but I don't know if Babel was quite good enough to win it all.
It was good and a powerful film, but just seemed to lack something in my opinion.

12. sort of like 'The English Patient" (was that the name?) a few years ago?
if not for the wood chipper 'Fargo' should have won. }(

I think I have the same year for those films. :dunce:

11. Hoping Helen Mirren wins
Her performance was, in a word, stunning.

Just watched Little Miss Sunshine last night. Loved Alan Arkin and Steve Carrel, thought the rest of the movie was, well, okay.

15. "Little Miss Sunshine" SHOULD win it, but...
actually, it will be "Babel"

I thought that "Little Miss Sunshine" was the best of the 5. Great script, interesting characters. The most inventive of the 5 nominees.

"The Departed" was a good movie, but it was a sort of typical Martin Scorcese film. That's certainly not a bad thing, but we've seen it before.

17. Yes, LMS was delightful, quirky, etc - but Babel was PROFOUND -
one of the best movies (perfectly integrated soundtrack, cinematography - and told a story that required patience to absorb - not a common attribute in this click and surf society). We were, and remain, profoundly moved by it.

21. I thought the Japanese segment was the strongest part of the movie
I was really moved by the girls pain and it was wonderful when the cop realized she was going through powerful depression and self doubt and comforted her. The other scenes were also powerful but I thought parts of the movie dragged. It was hard to sit through. I guess I have been absorbed by the click and surf society, because I wanted to click over to something else.

I agree that it should have been nominated and it's message was the most powerful of all the above films.

24. Actually, parts of various movies ran in my mind as I watched - Lost in
Translation, Thin red Line (for the similarities in parts of the soundtracks) - we are going to watch it again this evening. As I type this, I am listening to the soundtrack.

19. I've seen all but Letter From Iwo Jima and I think Babel will win. I did love Little Miss
Sunshine. It was a Perfect little movie, but Babel was just so powerful to me and stayed with me days afterwards. I was upset though that the housekeeper was fired and thought that her employers would have had more compassion after what they had been through.

As to The Queen! I LOVE Helen Mirren and she was her usual brilliant self. The film though had two problems for me. The first, it could had been a made for tv movie and more importantly, Tony Blair's role. It was and is so hard for me to believe that the same man that was shown in the movie as being sensitive and truly concerned about Elizabeth and her people is the same criminal that connived his people into an illegal and immoral war.

The Departed was wonderfully acted and directed and yet I kept looking at my watch.

22. Well I just watched Babel and I'm surprised it's so highly regarded
I don't understand why the Japanese subplot was there at all. Perhaps someone can clue me in. The Moroccan and Mexican subplots were terrific and I think it would've been a better movie if that was all it covered. However, the only Oscar contest I feel very strongly about this year is Best Supporting Actress. If Adriana Barraza doesn't win she should definitely call 911 and report a robbery!

23. Babel is about not connecting, about not listening, not communicating....
the Japanese part was an example of a young Girl, strugging of coming of age without her mom (in fact, hounded by the horror of watching her mom end her life) - with an inability to communicate with the society around her due to her hearing impairment. It was just one of many examples in the movie of a world society hampered by all sorts of communication issues - language, culture, physical problems.

29. But the narrative was asymmetrical, for want of a better word
The other two subplots were about cultural misunderstanding leading to tragedy. There were few parallels between the Japan story and the other two -- which were very similar to each other in their arcs. I think there were two very good movies in Babel but each would've worked better on its own and with more reels.

26. I agree
I think it was a great movie and am a big fan of Inarritu, but the Japanese plot with the father owning the rifle which ties this into the others seemed a bit contrived. The writing was not as tight as "21 Grams" which definitely wasn't as great as "Amores Perros". Still liked it though.
