WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Within the next few months the Bush administration will ask Congress for more money to pay for the war in Iraq next year beyond the $70 billion in a White House budget plan, a senior Pentagon official said on Tuesday.
"...Based on what I know ... it would be late spring time" for the new funding request, Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England told the Senate Budget Committee.
The White House has been criticized by Democrats and Republicans in Congress for submitting this month a budget request for fiscal year 2009, which begins in October, that seeks $70 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, far less than what actually will be needed, and no money for subsequent years.
