WASHINGTON - The House has voted to hold two of President Bush's confidants in contempt for failing to cooperate with an inquiry into whether federal prosecutors were ousted for political reasons.

Angry Republicans boycotted the vote and staged a walkout.

The 223-32 vote Thursday targets presidential chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers. The citations charge Miers with failing to testify and accuse her and Bolten of refusing Congress' demands for documents related to the 2006-2007 firings.

Pelosi, at news conference immediately after the Republican walkout of the House:


"Bush is considering delaying his trip to Africa tomorrow in order to come to some kind of agreement with us." (about the Protect America Act)


"We believe there has been abuse of power by the executive branch in their refusal to respond to subpoenas to come here for testimony (Miers and Bolten). We support this contempt resolution and will pursue it." (paraphrasing slightly)


"House principals will remain here to get this done. Our first priority is to reconcile the House and Senate bills on FISA. On this FISA bill, our 2 major concerns are exclusivity and retroactive immunity."



"Richard Clarke and one of Bush's own advisers both said that if the August bill (Protect America Act) is allowed to expire in 10 days, there is STILL plenty of opportunity to continue eavesdropping for as long as one year, so the president did not tell us the truth when he said that 'letting this law expire in 10 days would leave us unprotected.' The repugs wanted the FISA bill to come to the floor...the Dems chose the contempt charges instead. There were a LOT of republicans in the chamber yelling & cheering on Boner when he was speaking & crying about how dangerous it is for the Dems to be ignoring the FISA bill....suddenly you saw a huge number of Democrats enter the chamber as well...shortly thereafter the repugs left in a huff. LOLOL :rofl:
