Personally, I think I would choose either an environmental group like the Nature Conservancy or a social justice group like the ACLU. I love nature and fear for the future of mother earth. Likewise, I fear what may happen to this country should our civil rights continue to be oppressed.
However I would probably set that money up in an interest bearing trust fund, thus I would be able to give out significantly more money over into perpetuity.
can be great tools for managing large gifts. With professional managment the principal can grown while income is produced.
Unfortunately, my inquiry is purely academic. I'm interested in seeing what organizations DUers look on favorably and charitably. I expect some favorites. And some surprises.
Not necessarily my own locality but I'd pick small but highly effective people and groups that work one on one with individuals. I would not pick any large established charities. Along the lines of Hosea Williams feed the hungry programs, or individual lawyers trying to help disabled veterans, or women business people trying to get women in deep poverty educated and into good jobs etc. etc etc etc.
Not that large charities don't have a place. I just prefer the small ones where people are working in their spare time instead of expecting the charity to give them a salary for what they do.
