A brilliant Philadelphian has passed from the scene...

Rick Selvin, 64, editor, musician
By Gayle Ronan Sims

Inquirer Staff Writer

Rick Selvin, 64, of University City, a musician, Philadelphia Daily News editor and writer, and 10-year heart-transplant survivor, died of multiple organ failure Tuesday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Born into a musical family (his father, Ben Selvin, was a big band leader in the 1930s), Mr. Selvin shared his love of music with his wife and children.

Mr. Selvin grew up in Beverly Hills, Calif., then moved to Long Island, N.Y. He graduated from the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

After writing for a few years for the Burlington County Times and the Courier Post, he was hired in 1980 as an editor and writer by the Philadelphia Daily News.

Rick was a patient of mine for many years and was one of the most fascinating people I've met in a lifetime. His knowledge of politics, of the arts, of literature, and of contemporary events was unparalleled. On top of everything else he was, he wrote many of those remarkable headlines for the Daily News here in Philly which were amazingly creative, "punny", and right on target. He was one of those people who, after listening to one of my diatribes about RWers or the like, could utter a simple three or four word statement which would sum everything up in an amusing and accurate fashion. Very disarming.

He'll be missed.
