The difference between "National" and "Homeland" security.
My 10 yr old neice asked. My sister answered that National security keeps us safe from people in other countries who want to hurt us. Homeland security is there to keep rich Americans rich and lesser Americans lesser through fear and intimidation.

I thought that was an interesting insight.

Discuss.

1. "Homeland" security also has a creepy sort of Third Reich framing.
From the very beginning I've referred to the DHS as the Ministry of Fatherland Security.

2. as long as we're talking semantics
I'd argue that there's nothing "lesser" about not being rich.

But apart from that, there is certainly something suspicious about "Homeland" security.

4. I think it is a good definition
since I've yet to see "homeland security" do anything except hurt poor folks (ie the Samoan baby who died, Katrina victims, etc).

5. I've come to the conclusion that while
National Security is intended to keep the nation safe against against all enemies foreign and domestic, Homeland Security is intended to keep corporations safe from the American People.

“From what I have seen from the Justice Department documents so far, there is no need to provide amnesty to telecommunication companies who are protected under current law, as long as they and the government are acting accordingly."

Thanks for the thread, Rosemary.
