***DUzy Awards for weeks ending February 8 & February 15, 2008***

Welcome to the sleek, scintillating, snarkalicious DUzy Awards, a compendium of star-spangled amusement from the last two weeks on DU. Congratulations to the winners!

The DUzy Awards will be announced every Friday, if I get around to it. Previous awards can be found in my journal.

Note to Mods: Skinner has authorized the DUzy Awards to be posted in GD.

The question has been asked more than once: What does a DUzy Award look like? Happily, the question has finally been answered by DU's own kgfnally, whose magnificent design will now grace the awards threads. Please join the Academy and me in a round of applause for our brilliant designer. Take a bow, kgfnally!

:applause::applause::applause::applause::applause::applause:

Poll question by rfranklin:

Should my friend piss on Cheney's grave?
Over lunch today, my friend confided that he is saving up for a plane ticket which he will use to visit Cheney's grave (barring the possibility that it will be at an undisclosed location.) He is willing to risk arrest. Do you think that this is an acceptable form of civil disobedience?

:bluebox: No, this would be too disrespectful.

:bluebox: Yes, count me in too!

:bluebox: No, but tipping over the grave marker would be okay.

:bluebox: No, I think it is not disrespectful enough.

response #1 by Buzz Clik:

I'd wait until he's dead and buried. It would be pointless beforehand.

response #4 by zanne:

Nah. It's only acceptable to pee on people when they're alive.
After they're dead, it just isn't cool.

response #7 by zanne:

WHAT HAS THIS PLACE DONE TO ME!!?? NT

See below for a Special Visual Achievement award from this thread. At press time, "No, I think it is not disrespectful enough." was winning with 55% of the votes. A trickle of other good responses in the thread.

OP by Jackpine Radical:

So, will we get our choice of garnishes? What goes well with wages?
# Citrus Garnishes

Take lemons and make lemonade, or create beautiful decorations for your table. You can dress up anything edible -- from a simple glass of water to a glazed pork main entree. Not only is citrus colorful, it also smells nice and is easy to work with. In this section, we'll teach you how to create citrus knots, scored citrus slices, citrus loops, and candied citrus peels.

# Fans, Flowers, and Butterfly Garnishes

These garnishes are really creative. Transform a regular lemon or lime into a butterfly that will flitter along your dinner plate. Give the beautiful butterfly a flowery place to land by creating cherry flowers. Or, get even more creative with sugared flowers and fruit. There are always strawberry fans to cool off your shortcake or frosty beverages. Learn how to make these fun fruity garnishes in this section.

# Chocolate Garnishes

Chocolate is irresistible. What's not to love? It tastes great, tricks the brain into releasing chemicals that make you happy, and it's beautiful on the plate. Garnishing with chocolate takes a little bit of work, but it's well-worth the effort. Chocolate curls, cutouts, and chocolate-dipped fruits and nuts are only the beginning. We'll show you how to melt and pipe dark chocolate and white chocolate, as well as how to make white chocolate curls and cutouts.

# Bell Pepper Garnishes

Bell peppers are delicious vegetables. Many of the most bell peppers come in the stoplight colors of red, yellow, and green. When shopping for bell peppers, choose peppers that are evenly shaped and without blemishes to get the right results. In this section, we'll teach you how to make bell pepper rings, baskets, triangles, and cups.

# Carrot Garnishes

Bugs Bunny was famous for eating carrots. Carrots have been proven to be good for your eyes. They can also improve what your eyes see, especially with these great carrot garnishes. Learn how to turn a regular root into a variety of popular flowers. You can also curl carrots and make carrot stars. You can even use a tiny bit of caviar in one of the garnishes. Find out which one in this section.

# Cucumber and Zucchini Garnishes

Cucumbers and zucchinis are versatile. Their deep green colors add a lot of panache to everyday meals. Keep their outer green peel on the strips you peel -- this line of color looks really good on the plate. Most cucumber and zucchini garnishes can be used interchangeably. Learn how to make cucumber and zucchini twists, ribbons, and flowers in this section.

On a thread by cushla_machree:

Do Canadians really have to wait in long lines for health care?

response #14 by jberryhill:

      In the cold...
Canadians are just dropping dead like flies. At night, the sick and dead Canadians are swept off of the streets, still standing in the lines waiting for the clinic to open.

That's why they live short miserable brutish lives, just like all of those European countries where they eat sick old people.

Don't believe those life expectancy statistics. Because everyone everywhere but the US is just barely scraping by, then they don't get heart disease from being overweight, and they all ride public transportation and don't ride in cars because they tax gas too much, so there are fewer traffic fatalities.

In Canada, they don't really have health care, they just leave the sick out in the cold to die. Same thing in Norway and Switzerland.

Oh, and don't even THINK of going outside of the US to see for yourself. Homeland Security will pepper you with questions when you try to get back in, because anyone who thinks there is something worth actually going to another country for is probably some kind of subversive danger to this country.

And for this, everyone outside of the US is taxed into poverty. There are no wealthy people anywhere but in the US.

Poll question by cgrindley:

What to do with the GD: Primaries forum after the primaries?
I know that we've all really enjoyed this forum--sort of a lounge inhabited by people who've all had head injuries and high fevers--but we have to figure out what the Admins should do with this forum after the primaries end...

:bluebox: Simply delete it and pretend it never happened

:bluebox: Keep it archived as a monument to man's inhumanity to man

:bluebox: Tombstone everyone who posted in it and recycle the servers that stored it

:bluebox: Print it out a few times and repeatedly shred it

:bluebox: Other

response #4 by lurky:

      Salt the earth.

response #5 by Kurovski:

Make George W Bush memorize every word typed within, and repeat it verbatim
to Dick Cheney for ten hours a day, every day for ten years in a jail cell.

Edited to add: Karl Rove will be on book to be certain of Bush's accuracy. Should Bush make an error, Rove must give Cheney a titty-twister for each screw-up.

response #8 by mondo joe:

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

At press time, "Keep it archived as a monument to man's inhumanity to man" was winning with 60% of the votes.

Poll question by L. Coyote:

What does the W in George W Bush really mean?
White House informs world, waterboarding is not torture!

Of course it isn't! It can't be, not any more.
We found out yesterday that Bush authorized it.

Bush said "We do not torture" before the evidence we waterboard was known.
So now, of course, it can't be torture.
Simple logic founded on the dictator is never wrong!

Soooo, now everyone knows, now no other option remains.
But, we can still debate the meaning of his middle name.
As the torturous logic we all see through starts to sink in.

:bluebox: George Waterboard Bush.

:bluebox: George War Criminal Bush, or just "WC" for short.

:bluebox: George Woeful Bush for his impact on humanity.

:bluebox: George Wastage Bush in the usual sense.

:bluebox: George Wallop Bush in the effect on democracy sense, or just Junta for short!

:bluebox: George Wahoo Bush in the shrub sense (Lakota stature joke).

response #11 by MADem:

No, he'll vote for McCain. And that's even if the Dem nominee is Bozo the Clown
or Barack Obama or Al Gore.

Enough with the anecdotal bullshit--on BOTH sides!! If I hear that some asswipe won't vote for the candidate due to

--Race,

--Gender,

--Relatives, overly enthusiastic, overbearing, unkind, aggressive, rude, drunk on Billy Beer or otherwise

I immediately disregard those silly little stories.

After all, the ONLY valid reasons for NOT voting for a candidate are:

--Size of ass/thickness of leg/wingspan of ears

--Religion, especially if it involves UNDERWEAR

--Baldness, particularly when a lumpy head is involved--additional points are deducted for uncontrollable nose or ear hair

--Change of haircolor (double points deducted for lousy dye jobs), hairstyle/toupees or grooming of facial hair without suffiicient public warning

--Ditto for change of clothing style; double points will be deducted

--Degree of obesity, or if there's been a recent weight loss, resemblance to the Pop-n-Fresh character; alternatively, inability to put on weight, excessive thinness

--Smoking!! A cardinal sin in some quarters

--General "Ugly-ass" ness, an irritating/monotonous voice,

or

Any stupid idiotic reason that we read about on an anonymous political discussion forum!!!

Pay no attention to the issues, now! Follow this guide, and you'll have ALL you need to pick yourself a PRIME President!! Nothing else matters!!!!

I know how to make the Iraq 'War' drastically less expensive.
I think I just had one of them epiphany thangs.

They been tellin' us that "We need to fight 'em over there so we don't have to fight em over here".
They got it backwards.

We NEED to fight 'em right...over...HERE!
Here's why:
1. It's INCREDIBLY expensive to haul all those soldiers and equipment 'over there'. It costs in the brazillions of dollars to do that. If we fight 'em over here 99% of that cost of transportation vanishes.

2. It's INCREDIBLY expensive to support our troops 'over there'. We can feed and house them much cheaper right here.

3. Global Warming/Pollution - All that JP-4 (jet fuel) and oil we're burning to get planes and ships and everything and everyone 'over there' and back?
Not any more.

4. Fewer 'enemy combatants'.
How many Iraqis/Afghanis/Al Queda/insurgents/suicide bombers/snipers do you think could actually afford to come 'over here'?
Not too effin' many, I'll tell ya.
Will they be able to pay extra to check a second bag?
No way.
These guys, if they have a job at all, make about $3 a YEAR!

5. Easier ID of the 'bad guys'.
'Over there', they look just like everybody else.
'Over here' they'd kind of stand out, don't-cha think?
I mean how many cab drivers can New York absorb and assimilate?
:hide:

So there it is folks.
We don't WANT to fight 'em over there.
That's a losing proposition.
Let's fight 'em over here where there won't be near as many of 'em and we can find 'em easier.

This is a no-brainer.
Your comments will be given every consideration.
Thank you.

Poll question by Deep13:

      Most likely Romney excuse. (humor)
Which of the following excuses will Romney most likely cite as the cause of his gigantic loss in the Republican primaries?

:bluebox: Conservative base offended by underwear ad he did for Sears in the 1980's.

:bluebox: Didn't kill enough people in Vietnam.

:bluebox: Repressive, irrational, patriarchal, insular Evangelicals unwilling to accept repressive, irrational, patriarchal, insular Mormons.

:bluebox: That who let the dogs out song is so-o-o-o-o passe.

:bluebox: Why pick Romney when genuinely batshit insane candidates are available?

:bluebox: Turns out his magic underwear was just a cheap knock-off.

:bluebox: Anyone who leaves a nice red state like Utah for Massachusetts clearly has lost his values.

:bluebox: His perfect teeth alienated most Republican voters.

:bluebox: Thinks evolution might have some validity.

:bluebox: Unwilling to match McCain's million-year troop commitment in Iraq.

response #9 by Strawman:

Seamus on the roof of the car
It was all downhill for Mittens after that story came out.

Seriously though, asking the current Republican base to vote for Romney is like asking Larry the Cable Guy to vote for Judge Smales from Caddyshack.

At press time, "His perfect teeth alienated most Republican voters." was winning with 30% of the votes.

      Official announcement.
The House and Senate today announced that they are changing America's National Emblem from the Bald Eagle to the condom.

Joe Lieberman explained, "The condom more accurately reflects our mission, as it allows for inflation, halts production, destroys the next generation, protects a bunch of pricks, and gives you a sense of security when you are actually getting screwed".

'nuff said.

Can McCain Calm The Economic Markets The Way He Calmed The Baghdad Markets?
Simply by walking through them?

If he just went down to the NYSE accompanied by more than 100 American soldiers with three Black Hawks and two Apaches overhead, I'm sure the mortgage crisis would turn peachy within seconds.

response #1 by Lastlaughin08:

      Why must you criticize him?
He and Sen. Lindsey Graham score a pile of nice rugs for $5 from a struggling Baghdad street merchant and all you can talk about is how much firepower it took to close the deal.

Why do you hate rugs? Don't you enjoy a good bargain now and then? Doesn't everyone?

I'm shocked. Absolutely shocked. I may never get over this.

older you were supposed to become more conservative??

Not the way it is working for me, the older I am getting the more liberal and progressive I am becoming...

response #9 by jmondine:

There are several reasons a person grows more conservative
1. Loss of brain cells from excessive pot smoking
2. Sudden fear that your children might have minds of their own
3. Realization that driving a hummer works just as good as viagra
4. Four decades of TV commercials finally convince you that you're an idiot
5. Sure, ideals and integrity are great, but this stock-option yacht is fun. Woohoo!
6. Anti-gay stance develops as the older you get, the less likely your closeted fantasies about hot young studs will come true
7. Desperate attempt to deflect blame for how fucked up the world is
8. Selfish realization that you won't be around to see it get more fucked up
9. As mental acuity diminishes, no longer able to fend off secret mind-controlling thought rays beamed out of TV during the O'Reilly Factor
10. Tie-Dyed shirts no longer fit

Justin is packing our cabana-wear as I type, so get the tapas ready. :toast:

He's Mr. Dad123.

We're in the driveway, come on down for your hugs and kisses! :loveya:

Oh, and Justin's dad need no longer worry about his son being a "Jesus hater".

On our drive over we stopped at Club Ozone for a reviving cocktail where we met Jesus. He works at the Armani Exchange, isn't that fabulous?!

Long story short: we spent about two hours loving Jesus at The Biltmore.

93. OMG! LMAO!

That thread is in the same rarefied category as the poster(s) who joined to scream "Iron my shirt" all over the thread discussing the radio station prank.

Along with posting pictures of kitchens and demanding the gals of DU "get in there." It was a unique moment here on DU, for sure.

It's often times really hard to believe that I am lumped into the same species category with these quasi evolved sorts. Thanks for posting, that is muy bueno.

I'm torn thinking maybe that sort of talent requires it's own award.

Although if we could consistently draw that level of talent, the behavior should be encouraged.

Like republicanDad1,2,3,4,5 there are rare times when a troll/freeper/etc. has posted something worthy of recognition...

I'm suggesting you create an award for them. A fitting pedestal atop which would sit a DUmpster

44. kgfnally has created an elegant podium which we can all deliver our speeches from.
Y'all are going to have to start dressing up on Fridays. No more bathrobes and tattered thongs. I'm serious.

I love the mobile free-wheeling three-wheeler, pac-man, alien-pod, evil Knievel helmet look of it all. And the American-head lady mud flaps are still somehow elegant, so please don't clog JeffR's inbox with protests of sexism. I'm serious.

I love you all, just don't ask me for any more loans. I'm serious.

Sacrifice is all part of it. Dignity, for one. Then there's flop-sweat. And for every one person ROFL, there are two who hate you and forever think you're an idiot.

It's all such a horrific nightmare. Just like the end of that Twilight Zone episode.
