I Am Not Making This Up...

Dude. I just can't seem to escape politics these days. I went out last night with my wife to sing karaoke (we were in a couples contest). Some guy was sitting at a table next to us by himself, maybe early 60's. Pinstripe shirt, reading three different papers - the local paper, Wall Street Journal and something in a different language. It was clear that he thought he was clearly superior to everyone in the place and felt pretty self-important. No clue why he was even there. So anyway, at one point for some reason he started talking with me.

After a couple of pot shots at the karaoke host (who was African-American) I finally changed seats. I absolutely did not discuss any politics with this guy - in fact I do my best to avoid politics while in bars, it's a dangerous subject which can lead who knows where with all the alcohol in people's systems (including mine).

Well, later on I was sitting back in the other seat, and this guy was getting ready to leave. By this time he apparently felt that he and I were real buds, since I was the only person he'd talked to all night. So, as he was about to head out the door, he leaned in close to me and left me with two parting words of wisdom:

"John McCain."

3. Well, I went to my local VFW for fish fry tonight - you know, the VFW famed on DU for being full of

... Reichbots and Bushies and Republicans?? That evil VFW? Yeah, that's the one.

Well, I was chatting with Ken, the Post Quartermaster - he's 6'4, former Marine and Viet Nam veteran, gunnery sergeant, makes Clint Eastwood seem like a wuss - a Marine. Nobody would ever miss it. A Marine. I asked him if he kept in contact with anyone in a former unit in Iraq or Afghanistan.

He said he had been but didn't keep it up because he couldn't handle it. He then said the Bush was the worst thing to happen to the Marines since the Barbary Pirates (or words to that effect) and he couldn't wait until the lying criminal got justice. We chatted about $100 billion a year, nearly 4,000 troops killed, mercenaries ... and how much worse it is than Viet Nam. You know ... the typical stuff a former Marine gunnery sergeant might think.

I enjoy my local VFW - no, I'm not a member - yet - and all the post officers have similar attitudes toward this administration. Yet when I read DUers' opinions of the VFW (yes, I hated them when I first came back from Nam), I'm convinced I must be hallucinating. Oh well.

Imagine that. Karaoke bar - Reichbot. VFW - sane. Go figure.
