Bush Won’t Expess Opinions On Genocide Olympics: ‘I View The Olympics As A Sporting Event’

During a recent interview with the BBC, President Bush boasted that the United States is the “only nation” to have called the situation in Darfur “genocide.”

Yet later in the interview, Bush was asked if he would “applaud” Steven Speilberg’s recent decision to withdraw as artistic director of the Beijing Olympics because China is not doing enough to pressure Sudan to end the genocide in Darfur. “That’s up to him,” Bush said dismissively, adding, “I’m going to the Olympics. I view the Olympics as a sporting event.”

Bush took a subtle jab at human rights activists who will want to “opine” during the Olympics. “I mean, you got the Dalai Lama crowd. You’ve got global warming folks. You’ve got, you know, Darfur,” he said. “I am not gonna you know, go and use the Olympics as an opportunity to express my opinions to the Chinese people in a public way.”

1. "The Dalai Lama crowd"?
What a condescending, dismissive asshole! What a putz, douche, fuckwit, assbag, diddlefart, whistleass, whatever else you can think of. Every time that buttwipe opens his mouth he says something stupid, obnoxious and embarrassing. I can hardly wait until his ugly ass is back at the pig farm.

9. Why are the Olympics in China being described as
the genocide Olympics?

Why aren't all sporting events hosted by the US given that label?

10. Here's why:
Lights, camera — action
Steven Spielberg's refusal to direct Beijing Games could promote an important outcry over Darfur

IT used to be easy dismissing celebrities' inch-deep, minute-long musings on political issues. But when director Steven Spielberg canceled his Olympic contract to protest China's role in the Darfur catastrophe, it confirmed a trend.

Show folk — Mia Farrow, Don Cheadle, Bono, Angelina Jolie and now Spielberg — have been key in sparking public and government interest in the unsparkly, urgent problems of Africa. Now Spielberg and colleagues need to use their art to keep that interest alive, explaining problems in a deep enough way to prompt action.

In calling attention to Sudan, Hollywood seemed to work its magic on Spielberg himself. The director had signed on as artistic director of the Beijing Games, apparently unaware of China's intricate ties to the killing and rape of Sudanese civilians by government-sponsored militias.

In March, actress Mia Farrow blasted Spielberg's deal with the Chinese, warning that if he didn't speak out, he'd be complicit in a "genocide Olympics." Days later, Spielberg wrote to Beijing to protest their actions in Sudan. Shortly afterward, China appointed an envoy there.

But the bloodletting in Darfur, and China's lack of interest in it, went on. This week, Spielberg pulled the plug.
