Two native leaders sentenced to jail for blocking uranium exploration
Two First Nation leaders from Eastern Ontario were each sentenced Friday to six months in jail for ignoring a court order and continuing to block uranium exploration on land they claim as their own.

Superior Court Justice Douglas Cunningham also fined co-chief Paula Sherman and community spokesman Robert Lovelace $15,000 and $25,000 respectively for interfering with Frontenac Ventures’ mineral exploration claim.

Ardoch Algonquin First Nation was also fined $10,000 for past conduct.

He also set additional fines of $2,000 a day for every day the band is not in compliance with the court order.

Lovelace was sent to jail, however, Sherman was spared jail time because she is the sole support for three children and she will lose them if she goes to jail, said lawyer Christopher Reid, who represents the Ardoch Algonquin
