2. have you noticed how the original states/colonies have such
jagged borders, whereas the newer states have smooth, even, squared borders?

I know, I know - I'm lost in trivia :)

4. All due to the land surveying system outlined in the Land Ordinace of 1785.
The system of townships, sections, and all that good stuff goes back to days of the Articles of Confederation.
