I think our candidates miss the boat when zeroing in on health care pretty much exclusively. Maybe they aren't but the media is just reporting that more? Its good but I personally know people who voted for Bush who are hurting financially big time because of high food and fuel prices.

I think it would be smart to get these issues out front and center while McCain is still blabbering on with his "Be scared of the terra-ists, they are coming to get you.", BS which isn't at the top of most peoples list of things they are worried about.

People I know are worried how they are going to feed their families, fill their gas tanks and pay their heating bills.

1. Yes! You are so right - Health care is vitally important, but not more so than
being able to eat and stay warm. EXCELLENT!

What can/shall we do?

3. All the people who said that have been marginalized
It's the 1930's again, and just like then, it's deliberate.

We seem to have a problem executing the real traitors in our country. They keep showing up in positions of power, generation after generation.

"Help with food or fuel? Shut up, you socialist scum!"

4. prices are going UP so quickly because the corporations still want their cushy profit margins
And what was relevant at the beginning is now having to fight for attention. We need ALL of these things! But the a-holes in Washington, who have great health care and huge salaries want to toss beads at the populace.

6. er how about both? but the focus should be health care first and here's why
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 05:28 PM by pitohui
food and fuel are a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars a month

when you're seriously ill or injured health care is a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars A DAY

that's why it's such a key issue, no honest person, no matter how hard they work, can protect themselves against a health care disaster unless they have great top notch health care insurance that actually pays their bills

we scrimp to pay food and fuel and sometimes we have to do without but it is at least somewhat possible for an honest person to get a job that pays for these items

this is why health care is the area of focus

it's something NO honest person can save up for and just take care of themselves, not if they have 3 jobs, not if they have 17 jobs, just not possible because the cost of care is so high

7. Fuel prices and climate change are what's driving food prices
Let's address all three, along with the economy is general. If I were running for President this is what I'd propose:

Get the hell out of Iraq ASAP. Spend that $400 Billion that was slated for the faux "war on terror" on a new National high speed Mag Lev rail system with light rail connectors. Develop the areas around major train depots using the new urbanism designs that place mixed income homes and apartments within walking distance of retail, restaurants, office space, hospitals, schools, and theaters. These WPA-style measures would create tens of thousands of new jobs and make Americans more mobile, less dependent on foreign oil and our roads would be less congested. To really cut our energy use, I'd build 100 square miles worth of solar panels (a recent article stated that that's how many would be needed to power the entire US), with the eventual goal of making home energy free or nearly free for the poor, disabled, schools, hospitals, government buildings etc. Added benefit; cutting greenhouse gases and allowing those people or institutions to direct the savings elsewhere (like hiring more teachers or staff) .We could do both and STILL spend less than we have (and will) on the Iraq war.

Oh, and the "war on terror"? Let's hire more translators and overseas intelligence operatives. You can't fight terrorist cells by invading various countries; after all, we never bombed Timothy McVay's hometown.

9. It ain't gonna happen anytime soon
Especially with heating and other fuel expenses. Until the fossil fuels are no longer flowing and rich bastards aren't in control of those stores of energy, we will continue to have high costs of those resources.

Let's face it: it's scary to think of it, but murder has been committed for less than even the idea of discovering and creating alternative sources of energy.

10. That, too.
Add affordable housing, guaranteed jobs, and a living wage, and we are at least addressing poverty for those able to work.
