1. You do know the woman had a stroke and almost DIED?
I think this kind of shit is pretty disgusting. So what if she looks like a Barbie doll....going after her APPEARANCE is what the right wing morons do.

You can snark at her for being intellectually unrigorous, or stealing prescription drugs from people, but to carp about how she looks is just pinheaded. And sexist.

5. With all due respect, I had a very similar stroke. No lasting damage
and I'm fully functioning and active. There's degrees of stroke, mine was simlar to hers--and it wasn't much at all.

Yeah, I almost "died," too. But I'm more alive than ever--and healthier than I was before.

Don't buy it--they've played the sympathy card with her for YEARS (I'm an Arizonan).

6. She has issues as a result of it, to include sensation AND short term memory problems.
I think it's pretty pathetic that you'd even have to go after her. Her husband is target rich all on his own without having to haul her into it.

It says something about you, and what it says is not 'affirming' in any way. Even if you ARE an Arizonian, and you don't like her.

Then, in 2004, she suffered a stroke and nearly died.

The stroke occurred while she was out to lunch with some friends. "I started talking, and the next thing I knew, what was coming out of my mouth was just gibberish," she recalls. "My first thought was just to get out of there, but I couldn't walk. One of my friends' husbands actually picked me up and carried me to the car, then drove me to the hospital."

....McCain shows almost no signs of permanent damage from her stroke, which has been attributed to her failure to take her blood pressure medication regularly. "I was feeling fine, so I only took the medication once in a while," she notes. In conversation, she will occasionally have trouble remembering certain facts, especially from the recent past, and if you look closely you realize she cannot make her right hand into a complete fist, which has affected her handwriting, if not her ability to grasp a gearshift knob. "It's not bad," she says, describing the damage to her hand. "I can function. I have short-term memory loss. I can remember all the major details of my life, but I sometimes can't remember what happened last week."

In the immediate wake of the stroke, McCain's prospects did not look so good. Her right leg was dragging, and she had no use of her right arm. After a few months of physical rehabilitation, she decided to start hiking the trails behind Squaw Peak Mountain, which is visible in the near distance from the terrace. Then she announced that she was going to Coronado, a manicured resort town in San Diego Bay. "I'm going to take the summer, and I'm going to fix myself," she told her family. She stayed for four and a half months. "My husband was not happy with me," she recalls. "He didn't understand ... but it was a good thing for me to do."

I find her to be vapid, but I also find this curious willingness by so many DUers to start ripping the shit out of candidate's WIVES a bit UN-PROGRESSIVE. Sexist, too. Certainly 'low road.'

How long would anyone sit quietly if someone went after Michelle Obama for her appearance? The howls of outrage would span thread after thread.

7. Yes, okay, but my stroke virtually mirrors hers. She's not pathetic at all
Edited on Thu Feb-21-08 10:42 AM by blondeatlast
and I would be insulted if people were being asked to feel sorry for me the way we are being manipulated into feeling sorry for her.

My recovery, too, mirrors hers (Phoenix has the best neurological hospital in the country and both of us were the beneficiaries of the best care available).

BTW, I'm 47 now. My stroke was revitalizing--hers is used as a sympathy tool, IMHO. Another way to say hands off of Ms. Hensley--and yes, I despise what that family has done to Arizona (Right to work, for instance).

11. Just because you had a stroke, too, doesn't excuse your behavior.
In fact, it suggests a disturbing lack of empathy to go with no small amount of immaturity.

You can say what you want about her beer-distributing family and their rightwing political views, but to go after her on such a personal, appearance based, sexist level is frankly, unbecoming.

8. Agreed, and thank you for this.
Just like the hue and cry back when Bill was running the first time and Rush was poking fun at Chelsea on almost a daily basis -- that was mean, cruel, and hurtful. It's out of line on whatever side of the political fence one may sit. Leave the candidate's families out of it, and I DON'T CARE if the family member in question is an adult or child -- they are NOT fair game. If I had to attack the candidate by going after his family, then I think I would be brushing up a little better on my talking points, for that is a sheer sign of ignorance on many levels.

9. But the family member in question here is every bit as corrupt and ambitious as he is.
You have to be familiar with the Arizona political machine to understand this but the Hensleys are heavily part of it.

14. That may well be, but at the risk of repeating what MADem just said...
...go after her for those things, and not attack her for her physical issues or how she's handling those.

I think that's all we're saying. Believe me, I have no great love for either John or Cindy McCain, but these attacks on her botox appearance, etc., are just juvenile.

19. You seem to have no problem 'ripping' on other posters on this
forum, so how can you say it is "certainly low road" to do so? Rather hypocritical, what?

4. I was surprised to learn she's only in her 50's.
I honestly thought she was closer to her husband's age.

13. I meant Cindy McCain.
Cindy's year of birth is listed as 1954 making her only 54 this year. She looks a hell of a lot older.

But McCain first wife was also much younger than him? Yuck. Why do these young women want someone nasty like him?
I guess it's true that power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.

15. No, his first wife was the ex-wife of a classmate. She may have been a year older, not sure
but they were of the same vintage.

She brought two kids to the marriage, he adopted them.

18. That's what I thought too.
I had to do a double take when I saw her age.
Maybe marriage to that a**hole ages a woman.
