McCain cancels Michigan press conference

WAYNE -- Sen. John McCain toured Ford's Wayne Stamping and Assembly Plant on Thursday, but canceled a press conference in which he was sure to face more questions about his ties to a Washington lobbyist.

The all-but-certain Republican nominee for president took a brief walk around the plant's floor, where more than 2,700 workers build Ford's Focus compact car. It was an unusual backdrop for what turned out to be a photo-op campaign stop for the Arizonan; McCain has long championed regulations that the domestic automakers have opposed, including higher fuel-efficiency standards.

McCain staffers took pains to keep local media away from McCain during the tour, on a couple of occasions pushing journalists away from McCain's vicinity, according to a pool reporter who accompanied the tour. The campaign had alerted local and national media that McCain would answer questions from reporters after the tour, but informed the media just minutes before McCain arrived that there would be no press conference. Campaign staffers gave no reason for canceling the press conference.
