Every person that listens to or watches one of their programs constitutes a set of eyeballs that are sold to advertisers.
That is the reason Imus is on the air. And it's the reason Olbermann's on the air. Neither of them would be kept if their ability to attract viewers were to stop. Advertisers don't pay television networks out of the goodness of their hearts. They pay the network to provide X viewers.
Ever wonder why Olbermann can be on the same network as Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough?
Hmm...
And just in case it comes up: I'm a huge Olbermann fan.
