I am sure both will do it in an act of Unity for America but I am wondering what positions would be appropriate ones and what Republicans could we stomach? I suppose Gates could be left at Defense as long as he wasn't calling the shots but only following direction. What other Dept could we trust a Republican in? I would hope not Energy or Education. Maybe Agriculture  any ideas?

1. Depends who it is.
I would definitely want one of us in the big three: state, treasury and defense.

2. I can't imagine leaving Gates there--he's a decent man, but he's too
wedded to Bush's policies. Grassley for Agriculture?--he may not want it, it's better to be a Senator than to go into a dead zone like that. I'm pretty sure Hagel has a job waiting for him somewhere in an Obama cabinet, mostly because Obama lists him consistently as one of his favorite Repubs when the cabinet topic comes up--and Hagel will be unemployed next January. Dick Lugar, too, is one of Obama's mentors. Don't know where they'll be used.

Defense Secretary Nominee Robert Gates Tied to Iran-Contra Scandal and the Secret Arming of Saddam Hussein

President Bush nominated former CIA director Robert Gates on Wednesday to replace Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense. We take a look at Gates’ role at the CIA in connection to the Iran-Contra scandal and the secret arming of Saddam Hussein with former CIA analyst Mel Goodman, who testified before the Senate in 1991 against the nomination of Gates as CIA director, and investigative journalist Bob Parry who helped expose Iran-Contra

18. I think he's done the best he can in the SecDef role--I think he helped
keep us out of Iran, frankly. And he's very popular with the military--my husband and his colleagues deal with him sometimes in their particular line of work, and they very much respect him.

20. Yeah, I understand your husband is military. Not at all trying to be
disrespectful or mean but I hardly care what/who anyone in the military respects. These are people who follow orders to kill innocents knowing that what they are doing is wrong.

I know you'll tell me that the military is there to serve, protect, and defend our country but they has not been the case during this war or the fiasco in Viet Nam.

Just so you know, my brother John was a sharpshooter for the Air Force. Stationed in Diabykur, Turkey.

My brother Tom was in the Marines. He was stationed in various places, Japan and I believe Germany being two of them.

My brother Bob was a pee-tester when he was in the Army. He was in Germany.

My Dad was in the Navy. Shipboard.

22. That's OK. Just saying that the military likes and trusts Gates more than
they did Rumsfeld--they think he's certainly been more competent. I suppose that's not a ringing endorsement.

housebreak in 7 years) would have been better than Rummy.

26. LOL! Would have saved us a bazillion dollars, at least--
all for the cost of replacing the Sec Def office carpet after Jack's tenure.

him Sec of Def. so he can protect Israel.

3. Maybe we should create a department of fucking things up?

4. If a Republican
Is named Secretary of Defense - it will make it more difficult for the GOP to oppose Obama's policies in that area.

16. And adds to the meme that Democrats are weak on defense and need a GOP'er to keep things together.
Not to mention that the GOP is the biggest reason that the military is in such a sad state these days.

7. Federal prisons?
No really, maybe they could be in charge of the reparations to Gitmo prisoners and their families, and reparations to the Iraqis. I suggest this office be stationed somewhere outside the Green Zone. OK, so you can tell...I'm not ready to make nice.

9. NO! Not Gates .....Please!
Certainly not anybody that has had anything to do with this administration ... which rules out, well, any Republican. Because any Republican who is worth his/her salt would have already changed to Democrat rather than be even remotely associated with this administration. Well, maybe Chafee ... oh, he switched didn't he.(Case Closed)

11. Not Arlen Specter or Susan Collins
If we hold Hillary's votes against her, then I think we should hold Specter and Collins' votes against them. Snowe has voted OK a couple of times.

13. NO NO NO on Specter!
He's spent more time footdragging and ENABLING the Republican Obstructionism than ANY of them. His usual MO -- question something Bush has done (this for a CONVENIENT photo-op or interview), have a meeting with a Dem to *suss it out*, and then BACK the policies he originally objected to in the first place!

Kick his aged ass out! And let him take Susan and Olympia with him.

Put them in the sewers with a scrub brush. And NO masks. And then let them complain to the OSHA they practically dismantled about their working conditions. :sarcasm:

who was EPA administrator for a while? Christy Todd Whitman, was that her name? I know she got on the outs with Bushco, so she may still have some conscience left. And Lincoln Chaffee would be good, I think.
