Ashes of Margaret Truman Daniel to be interred Saturday at parents' burial plot

The ashes of Margaret Truman Daniel, the last Kansas City area native to call the White House home, will be interred today at the burial plot of her parents, Harry and Bess Truman.

Daniel, the former president’s daughter, died Jan. 29 in Chicago. Her public memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. at the Truman Library in Independence.

Truman Library officials expect the facility’s auditorium, with fewer than 250 seats, to be filled with family, friends and invited guests for the first portion of the service. Overflow visitors and the public will be invited to listen over loudspeakers in the library’s museum galleries, as well as watch on television monitors.

Following the service, all visitors will be invited to the library’s courtyard. There, the ashes of Daniel and those of her husband, E. Clifton Daniel, who died in 2000, will be interred in a vault not far from the Truman graves

1. Margaret Truman Daniel’s early life steered service to Independence

Clifton Truman Daniel Clifton Truman Daniel, the eldest of Margaret Truman Daniel’s four sons, is director of public relations at Truman College in Chicago. He talked with The Star about the days leading up to his mother’s death Jan. 29 and the decision to schedule her memorial services in Independence. Some excerpts:

Why did you and your family choose to schedule the memorial service at the Truman Library?

Neither one of my parents had left any directions as to what to do. In trying to pick a place for the service, we thought of New York or Washington. We thought briefly of Chicago. But it just seemed that Independence, where she was born and spent the first 10 years of her life, made the most sense.

We felt from the start that we wanted to make it a public memorial service. I wanted as many people who wanted to pay their respects to Mom to be able to.
