Westboro Baptist Church to Protest 19 yo rape/murder victim Brianna Denison's Funeral

In Reno, some may be aware of the tragic story of Bri Denison who sadly, is the latest murder victim at the cruel hands of what appears to be a budding serial killer.

Reno has been a target of Westboro Church for some time.


And now we are told that Westboro will be protesting this young woman's funeral:

Hate Group Plans to Picket Brianna Service

The Westboro Baptist Church, categorized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, plans to picket 19-year-old murder victim Brianna Denison's funeral.

After considerable discussion and debate among the staff in this newsroom, we decided to cover this story. We know this group seeks attention through their actions, and felt the very nature of their actions garner attention with or without our coverage. Channel 2 News received numerous complaints and concerned emails about this scheduled picket and opted to let you know what's going on.

On the group's web site, www.godhatesfags.com - you will find a press release where they call Reno an "evil place."

That's what a handful of WBC members were doing in Reno at Army Staff Sergeant Sean Gaul's funeral when a group of bikers called the Patriot Guard Riders showed up in huge numbers.

This video on youtube.com, titled "God Hates Reno", purports to be a news story, showing confrontation between the bikers and WBC members. There appears to be a struggle, but no identifiable assault. The video is believed by some to be made by WBC, with Reno apparently lacking a journalist by the name "Frank Douglas" and a news organization that simply calls itself "News."

In a press release, (click here for PDF file), WBC claims it's picketing Brianna's memorial service Saturday because the Reno police supported the bikers' actions.

"I lose sleep over this group," adds Joe Taylor, Senior Pastor of the South Reno Baptist Church, "it hurts me that they have the word 'Baptist' in their title. It hurts me more that they have the word 'church.' "

Reno police will be at the service Saturday to keep an eye on things. The bikers and others plan to drown out WBC like they did for Sean Gaul's service.

I for one am having to really calm my SO down -- he's adamant about going down there himself to confront these nuts. I said, "Are you nuts? Let the cops take care of it. Don't get in the middle."

He is absolutely livid. While we did not know Bri personally, she worked with our daughter at one of the local swimming pools last summer, so our daughter knew her that way. She also was abducted from her friend's home near the UNR campus, where my husband works. It's all hitting very close to home in our small community, and now this? He's outraged, and if I know one thing, you don't want to piss a man like him off over matters such as this. He's disgusted with their religiosity, their bile and he feels so bad for the Denison family. Oh, I could go on, but my blood pressure is rising as I type, to I'll just shut up. *sigh*

Isn't anyone monitoring the lives of these people? If a few people, who have been burned by the Westboro cult, monitored them, they might be ridiculed out of existence.

For instance, photographing or videotaping their private lives. A little video of them abusing children or animals or whatever they do when they're not protesting, given publicity, would horrify the public and neutralize them. Demanding the finances of the church, or getting some of their expenditures or finding what they're really purchasing, could be illuminating. (Remember that Al Capone was brought down because he couldn't explain where he got all that money that he wasn't paying taxes upon.)
