Sheriffs protest fed drug-war fund cuts
http://www.rawstory.com/news/mochila/Sheriffs_protest_fed_drug_war_fund__02232008.html

The Bush administration has argued that the program should end because crime is down and the money is needed elsewhere. That assessment clashes with reports from many states of record hauls of drugs, especially methamphetamine and marijuana, and increased activity by drug gangs.

2. Good grief, I almost sort of agree with Bush, there. The drug war is a fucking sham, joke, and a
gravy train to boot.

I can see, at least, adopting a harm reduction approach to hard drugs and trying to keep meth off the streets, for instance- but the lion's share of the $40 Billion we spend on the "drug war" (not incl. costs of incarceration, mind you) goes towards keeping people like Willie Nelson and cancer grannies from smoking pot. It's ridiculous.

Pot should be legal, regulated, and taxed. Period. Let the sherrifs fight actual crime, instead of going after pot smoking... end prohibition, and the "drug gangs" will go the way of Al Capone.

6. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
This time, he picked sheriff drug-busting budgets to axe instead of S-CHIP or VA benefits.

4. A video I saw on the news last night ...

from a patrol car camera of a traffic stop ... showed a LEO planting a bag of marijuana on a suspect they were frisking at the time. I just wonder if the 'profit incentive' has gone too far and the need for this funding needs to be reexamined.
