Republicans are scared-Op-ed in my paper today
http://www.thedailylight.com/articles/2008/02/24/opinion/doc47c0ca9ee0ae4129335208.txt
An open letter to Republicans in Ellis County: Allow me to start with a quote. It summarizes a presumption I share with a former President.

“They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” – Ronald Wilson Reagan as quoted by Michel Quinn Sullivan in the Empower Texas Newsletter

I will, as usual, be voting in the Republican primary. If anyone cares, I plan to vote for Congressman Ron Paul for President. And, yes, quick-on-the-draw radio pundits, I voted for President Bush twice and will most probably vote for the Republican nominee for president this November, even if he is the dreaded “M” word. I encourage my fellow Republicans not to waste your vote.

If you are a Republican, please do not vote in the Democrat primary in order to attempt to influence their choice of Presidential nominee. The Democratic primary is obviously for Democrats. Do you really want to explain to your fellow Republicans why your voter registration card will be stamped “Democrat Primary?” As a sometime election judge, I would like to also remind you that the identifying stamp – branding you as a member of the party of Hillary Clinton, Ted (Life Guard) Kennedy and Michael (the Tank) Dukakis – will be in brightly colored ink. But go ahead if you must; your neighbors’ heckling will breed character. Hanging “Chads” and Florida aside, engage in a little fair play here.

Let the Democrat Party’s members vote their conscience in “their” primary. American lefties have not had the opportunity to have such a good time since FDR’s administration referred to Stalin as “Uncle Joe.” Don’t spoil their party, yet. While I hear Republicans saying they wish to vote in the other party’s primary to disrupt the candidacy of one or another part of the “Hilbama” hydra, the Democratic primary is truly none of “our” business. Yes, Texas does have an “open” primary system, and it follows that if you are really in accord with the views of, say, Barak Hussein Obama, you may certainly cross over to the Democrat primary and vote for the junior senator from Illinois. I submit it is only ethical to do that if you really believe in the candidacy of Barak Hussein Obama, or Hillary Rodham Clinton.

1. Where does this garbanzo live?
I'm not in the habit of showing anyone my voter registration card except the folks staffing the polling place. Apparently, this guy regularly shows his registration card to his pals and they likewise show him. I can just hear the conversation:

"Hey Bill, got your voter ID card on you?"

"You bet, Fred. Lookee here."

"All right, you're registered Republican! Boy, that ink is brightly colored."

"Sure is. I know how we don't like government or anything, but damn, I gotta say they sure got that ink right! Mind if I see yours?"

"No problemo. Here ya go."

"Yesireebob! Another registered Republican! Attaway, boy!"

"Thanks. See you around."

"You too!" Bill turns away, and makes a mental note to himself that Fred occasionally uses Spanish. Probably doesn't mean much, but will certainly bear watching for a little while. You know. Just in case.

2. "Uncle Joe" came from *the media* during FDR's time in office - NOT
from the administration.

Watch the talking points.

I proposed that a lot of pukes might try that plan to horn in on our primary, and most everyone who responded to the thread thought I was nutso. I'm beginning to feel a little "i-told-you-so-itis" coming up my throat.

Yes, they're scared--they have reason to be. They know their "best" choice for a candidate sold his soul in 2004, and besides which, they believe he has plenty of friends on our side of the fence. No one is going to elect the religious zealot, and our candidates certainly won't pass the "white-man-christian" test, regardless which is our nominee.

They know they're done for at least 4 years, regardless. The only thing we have to worry about is screwing this opportunity up. And I like to think about something said many times in the past three and a half years, that HRC is the repukes' "worst nightmare." She knows where many of the bodies are buried, and is smarter than a good 90% of all the pukes in congress.

My choice is still John Edwards in a perfect world, but this certainly ain't a perfect world.

on edit: typo! (at least one of them)
