School Bus Driver Explains Why She Duct-Taped Kids
GREENWOOD COUNTY, S.C. -- A former elementary school bus driver who was arrested after being accused of duct-taping kids' mouths shut tried on Friday to explain why she did it.

The Greenwood County Sheriff's Office said that 39-year-old Helen Curry used standard adhesive duct tape on several boys and girls because she said they were being disruptive. The youngest was 5; the oldest was 12.

On Friday, Curry said tearfully, "To be a parent and be charged with cruelty of children and my child being one of the children... and my child being one of the children I am accused of being cruel to -- it breaks me down. It's really wearing on me and I'm trying to be strong."

She said, "Most of the media is making it sound like I bound and gagged kids from the very beginning that's not the case."

11. I think anything to keep them in their seats will make a difference
at least for awhile.

2. You can't duct tape kids
or velcro them into place for that matter.

5. Turn the radio up

That's what our bus drivers did. Our school bus was always noisy. I think some people are in the wrong job.

6. There really is no way to put a positive spin on this action
Having rode on a school bus many years ago, I can understand why a driver might WANT to do something like this but jesus, you gotta be smarter than the kids.

7. I'd like to see the Kids put on Hooks...like at a dry cleaners. The "Rack" could be on the bus....
...and when the Bus gets to the kids stop the driver could just push a button and little Johnnie would
be moved to the front door (like those movable rack at the cleaners).
The driver would pull a lever and lil' Johnnie would be unhooked, swooped down the steps, out the door and Bingo...No Problem.

8. I don't know why proctors aren't required on school buses.
It's insane to expect the driver to both drive the bus safely AND monitor the behavior of irrepressible kids.

9. I rode a school bus for 12 years and we didn't have a problem because a troublesome child would
be properly disciplined by parents.

Sometimes the old fashioned way is the best way.

10. My daughter's mouth was duck taped when she was
in the 2nd grade by a PE teacher's aide. There was a fairly big, but quiet stink made about it. She was reprimanded and we were assured it would never happen again. There was construction being done in the school and she was frustrated that the children were so noisy in the hallway while on the way to P.E. class. I was beside myself. There were 5 children involved, including the son of a school board member.

I never dreamed of having the woman arrested. I just e-mailed my daughter, now 36, to get her thoughts on this. I was HOT at the time and, with the help of other parents and administrators, made sure it was addressed.

Did I under react?

12. Probably a good thing I wasn't driving
I would have duct-taped them to the seats as well.
