Romney's Son Says Dad might re-enter the Race if McCain goes down.
Josh Romney, one of former Gov. Mitt Romney's five sons, says it's "possible" his father may rejoin the race for the White House, either as a vice presidential candidate or seek to become the Republican Party's standard bearer if the campaign of Sen. John McCain falters.

The 60-year-old Romney, who "suspended" his campaign for the GOP nomination after a disappointing showing on Super Tuesday and a week later endorsed McCain, was taking a break from politics this weekend on a skiing vacation in Utah with his wife Ann, according to his 32-year-old son.

The elder Romney, who was unable to assemble sufficient conservative support to thwart McCain, has made no public comment since the McCain camp was rocked...

by a controversial article in the New York Times last week first revealed in December in a posting on the Drudge Report.

Because he suspended rather than terminated his campaign, Romney still retains control of the nearly 300 delegates he's already won. Another former governor, Mike Huckabee, remains in the race and is nearing Romney's delegate totals, though few give him a realistic chance of catching McCain with more than 900 delegates.

2. i have always suspected that would happen
my thoughts are that Romney timed the hit on McCain with the release of the sex-scandal-hounds so that once McCain had sewn up the nomination over the Huckster he could jump back in...and having 'endorsed McCain' we end up in a "I scratched your back now you scratch mine" scenario...

A little tinfoily i know...but still...think about it...

3. So McCain might be a possible placeholder, nyt source had to have been a goper.
it better have been because if democrats have something good they better hold on to it until October.

10. Esp. since last week turned out to be a bust since the article's claims of impropriety
went more for the sex angle when there was absolutely no supporting evidence for that beyond "suspicion".

If the article had strictly stuck to apparent contradictions from McCain vis a vis dealing with lobbyists in general perhaps it would have lasted more than a few days.

5. Hmmmm....Makes you think McCain's troubles aren't entirely coincidental.....
..... Then the Repugs can get their next Manchurian Candidate to run, then steal another election.

23. Arnold shows why that might be a good plan: short time in the spotlight means public can't dig into
your dirt.

Arnold's history of sexual harassment, drug use, orgies, and the rest didn't have time to sink in and stick to him before the recall election here.

If Romney is injected at the last minute, it could help him avoid scrutiny too.

On the other hand, if the GOP is going to go to that much trouble, would they really put in a dud like Romney?

(in response to my own question, there's always the W. precedent).

13. Mittens doesn't stand a chance
Mittens bowed out to avoid the humiliation of officially losing- It might be interesting to see him reenter the race just so he could be officially beaten.

I suffered through this jackass's term as Governor of my state, and can assure you his lies and flip flops are in a class unto itself. Only the uber right wing would vote for him- They may be a vocal group, but they are a minority in this country.

Now it suddenly makes sense that the McCain story got some traction-- and that it even came up in the first place.

15. Josh Romney mulling a run against Blue Dog Democrat Matheson
Josh Romney told the Deseret Morning News that after a year of campaigning across country for his father, he's been approached to run as a Republican against 2nd Congressional District Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah.

"I haven't ruled it out," Josh Romney, 32, of Millcreek, said of becoming a candidate himself. "I'm pretty young, but I've had good experience on the campaign trail." Plus, he said, he likely could count on his father's supporters here in Utah.

He also has to consider whether he's ready to take on the rigors of another race and spend more time away from his wife, Jen, and their three children, Owen, 1; Wyatt, 3; and Gracie, 5; as well as his career in real estate development.

22. McCain has some appeal to moderates and independents. Romney will only rope in gullible
his constituency will be those who buy Tony Robbins tapes on late night TV and who secretly think Romney's money mojo will rub off on them if they vote for him.

25. they got corruption on the one hand and Huck on the other. Then there's the minority of ''fuck you
and leave me alone'' libertarians and klansmen. That last group doesn't have much cross-over appeal.
