1. Music
Nothing like a universal language "spoken" by an outstanding orchestra. Perfect choices as well. Dvorak's Symphony No. 9. The "New World." I just performed that one 2 weeks ago. It would be difficult under any circumstances not to be moved to tears by that one. I can imagine it was very emotional given the circumstances.

Yes, I would say we won the cultural war. The citizens of Karachi are more fortunate than they know.

WE'RE NUMBER ONE!

2. It was really good

I don;t know much about classical music but it was very stirring. I am going to download some classical music for my iPod tonight - any suggestions? I plan on getting Bach's Brandenburg concertos the allegro parts and some other stuff mentioned (see link) and that I checked out on youtube (CULTURE!)

3. Oh man, of course!
PM me what kinds of music you like or want to hear and I will get back to you. There are some good suggestions on that thread. Rabrrrrrr would be a great resource for some really cool contemporary stuff.

I really like the Bach and some Wagner and even the really etherial Handel stuff

Also, if this helps any, I fell onto some Portishead from 1998 playing with an orchestra.

Basically I am looking for long pieces of music mostly up tempo or just long even tempo'ed stuff.

I made the horrific mistake of downloading my wife's crap onto my iPod. Who the *#($ runs to BREAD????

5. *snort*
Although I am a classical musician with the preference for "snooty" music (usually stuff that only the people who are playing it like or people who take the time to learn the music rather than just listen) I have amazingly horrified my musical friends with my taste in just listening music. Bread? I would download some of their stuff to play while doing barn chores. Barry Manilow, The Carpenters...stuff that is pretty and simple and easy hum-a-longs. I don't know why. My brother who was an Opera musician did the same. I guess we both were/are a little odd that way so I can totally understand your wife and her selections. :) Personally I think that much of Pop music is meant to fill that niche but then what do I know? Obviously nothing. You could also ask Goddess of Guinness. She plays much more than I get to and probably has a bigger repertoire.

Try Shostakovich. Seriously loud and bombastic and very funny if you look up what he was saying about the Soviet government with his music. The long and very beautiful slow movements might be good for warm up or cool down periods but the rest would be great for running or working out IMO. I will try to think of more today and send them along.
