Glenn Beck: 'Rick Santorum is a Winston Churchill'

from ThinkProgress:

Beck: ‘Rick Santorum Is A Winston Churchill’

This morning on NPR, host Steve Inskeep asked right-wing pundit Glenn Beck who the “rising star” is in the conservative movement. Beck’s response? Defeated senator Rick Santorum. “I think the guy is a Winston Churchill in many ways,” said Beck. From the exchange:

BECK: You know, there’s really only one guy that I’ve talked to that I really really like. I think the guy is a Winston Churchill in many ways. He blew his Senate campaign because he spoke the truth. His advisers kept saying, “Don’t say this, don’t say this, this is going to hurt you.”

And that’s Rick Santorum out of Pennsylvania. I think this guy really has it. I think he really understands the world we live in right now.

Listen to it: http://thinkprogress.org/2008/02/26/santorum-beck-churchill/

Santorum would probably like this comparison. Whereas Churchill was actually battling Adolf Hitler and the Nazis in World War II, Santorum likes to pretend he is fighting a similar foe. In 2005, he blasted Democrats blocking President Bush’s judicial nominees and compared them to “Adolf Hitler in 1942“:

Some are suggesting we’re trying to change the law, we’re trying to break the rules. Remarkable. Remarkable hubris.

I mean, imagine. The rule has been in place for 214 years that this is the way we confirm judges. Broken by the other side two years ago, and the audacity of some members to stand up and say, “How dare you break this rule?”

It’s the equivalent of Adolf Hitler in 1942: “I’m in Paris. How dare you invade me? How dare you bomb my city? It’s mine.”

This isn’t the first time that Beck has compared Santorum to Churchill. In 2006, Beck hosted Santorum on his CNN Headline News show. “I’m going to be ripped apart for calling you Churchill,” said Beck. Santorum happily responded, “It’ll be a pleasure.”

31. Churchill was a Manic-Depressant (Now Called "bi-polar".
When he was up he did go, but when he was down...

Gallipoli Disaster of WWI was one such disaster:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallipoli_Campaign

His order the sinking of the French Fleet during WWII was anther:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Mers-el-K%C3%A9bir

The use of Gas by the British in Iraq in the early 1920s is attributed to Churchill (he authorized the use of Gas if the Germans would invade England, even if the German did NOT use Gas).
On British use of Gas in Iraq: http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issues/iraq/history/britishindex.htm
http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issues/iraq/history/1990airpow.htm

In 1925 he engineered England's return to the Gold Standard, which many economists blame for England's participation in the Great Depression.

In response to Churchill's return to the Gold Standard John Maynard Keynes wrote
The Economic Consequences of Mr. Churchill. I can Not find a copy on line, I even Check Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg only had Keynes earlier The Economic Consequences of the Peace see:
http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/15776

But I did find some cites that provided short essays on the Book:
http://www.gold.org/value/reserve_asset/history/monetary_history/vol2/1925jul.html

During the General Strike of 1926 (one of the results of the the return to the Gold Standard in 1925) Churchill is alleged to have demanded that Machine guns be used on the Strikers (No surviving written reports, but it was alleged). Through it is clear Churchill denied the Strikers access to paper so they could NOT spread they side of why they were on strike (i.e. no paper for Striker's pamphlets and newspapers, but all the paper for any newspaper who published anti-strike headlines).

He then praised both Hitler and Mussolini in the 1930s as both took over Germany and Italy. At the same time he opposed Independence for India and called Gandhi and Demigod. Churchill called Franco forces in Spain an "anti-Red Movement" . As late as 1937 he aid given a choice between the Nazis and the Communist, he would take the Nazis first.

He came into his own in regard to Germany as Hitler's plan became clear. Chamberlain helped pick him as Prime Minister for Chamberlain believe who ever succeeded him had to have the respect of all three major British parties and that ended up being Churchill. He had survive his many mistakes and was respected. It should be noted that the last pre-war English election, Chamberlain won. When Churchill decided to call an election in 1945, the first in over seven years, he lost. He won in 1950 but resigned in 1953. Thus as Prime Minster he only won once and that NOT during WWII. Churchill's mistake caught up with him in 1945, including opposition to National Health Service. My favorite story was when General Slim of the Burma Campaign was asked by Churchill how his man would vote, Slim told Churchill that almost to a man they will vote for Labor and against Churchill.

Churchill had his ups and downs. When he was up he did great things, when he was down, he made huge mistakes. Britain, at a time they needed a stead hand at the end of WWII, rejected him. We need someone with a Steady hand NOT a Churchill and definitely not a Santorum.

I was wondering who the idiot was, then they finished the segment and said it was Beck. He's got his own CNN show, why is NPR giving him more air time?

When he called himself a liberal when he was younger and then proceeded to describe himself more as a libertarian, I had to turn it off. Good thing I missed the Santorum reference. :puke:

AFAIK, "Santorum" is the one and only, Glenn.

And while I'm at it, NPR, if I want to listen to right-wing hate speech, I'll turn to AM. Why give this nut air time?

30. What's creepy is....
that most of Beck's audience likely knows nothing about Churchill.

This is how all these Right Wing radio and TV mouthpieces succeed: Their audience is so ignorant to begin with, they just accept whatever is fed to them.

Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 12:25 AM by OmahaBlueDog
All the candidates, including McCain have said that they would sign the Global Warming Treaty {horrors!}... and Obama would sign {forgive me, it's an international poverty treaty, the name of which escapes me}. Beck was apoplectic that this would bring One World Government. {Uber Mega Horrors!}
