Good guest and an interesting bit of history. He said that curiosity about Bryant after the election and reading the debates made Lincoln a national figure and thus the presidential campaign possible. I wish I had been taught history the way he presented it.

15. Until the 17th Amendment (in 1913), Senators were not elected by popular vote.
The Constitution stated "The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each state, chosen by the legislature thereof, for six years;"
18. Thanks, I wasn't clear if the Legislature voted directly or
if the votes were just tallied by district. The "rigging" was was in the favorable weighting of the slavery friendly regions. Standard gerrymandering stuff, it seems.
