quick help needed... web addy to find out whether an org.s funding leans right or left
Several years ago folks used to post links and results of searches on that website that let one "see" via who funds the work of the nonprofit whether the funders lean right or left. It was a very useful tool. I don't remember the name of the website - but really need to do a little background research on an organization. Does this ring a bell with anyone? If not, could you please help me kicked this up over a couple of different DU cycles (evening, late night, early morning, regular morning/day) - to help me find someone who might know to what I am referring, and can name the website? I work with a relatively small start-up nonprofit, and was just "invited" to participate in a policy-formation related effort by a national foundation that I can find very limited (and vague) info about. Before committing any time or human resources to the effort, I would very much like to out if there is a bigger agenda, that can be "seen" via who funds the work of the organization. Help finding the tool that might help us make this decision would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

salin

2. If it's a non-profit

you will not have much luck if it's a 501(c)(3).

In the last few years, IRS laws have become very strict regarding the confidentiality of donor identities. Small donors are not reported at all. Large donors are listed on IRS Form 990, Schedule B, but are NOT available to the public (the AMOUNTS given by large donors are public info., but not identifying info.)

You will only find donor info if the organization voluntarily releases it (which they are unlikeley to do).

3. You can go to Guidestar and read their last three 990 forms.

You can use certain information from them. It shows who is on their Board of Directors and check on them. You can learn a lot sometimes from checking their Board.
