Large Disturbance Reported At Miami Edison School, Police In Riot Gear Are Seen Going InToThe School
MIAMI -- A large disturbance at Miami Edison High School brought police to the school in riot gear after a fight inside the school and possible shots fired.

Multiple law enforcement agencies including City of Miami police and Miami-Dade school board police have been called to the school and K-9 units were seen going in to the school.

Local 10's Jacey Birch at the scene said she is being told by students that this started after a staged protest in defiance of something that happened Thursday at the school. The protest allegedly started peacefully, but then may have turned violent.

Rescue units have been called to the scene. A gurney was seen from Sky 10 being taken into the school.

People were brought one by one out in handcuffs and several people were seen leaving the school limping.

1. Is no place safe from violence? This sounds like an elementary school,
can Miami DUers help out?

Putting my son on the bus every morning should NOT have to be an act of faith.

Praying for a peaceful outcome, but it seems as if it may be too late for some. :cry:

3. listening live now
Looks like things got way out of control. Pepperspraying, hitting with batons, etc. Some of the students took video during the incident. The disturbance today was against the school administration for an incident that occured yesterday with the school principle.

Police descend on Miami Edison Senior High

<snip>

"Dozens of police cruisers rushed to Miami Edison Senior High School Friday morning after a fight broke out in the campus courtyard. It was the latest in a series of violent incidents at Miami-Dade schools this week.

One man, possibly a plainclothes officer, was seen limping out of the school at 6161 NW Fifth Ct. At least one person needed to be hospitalized.

Several students, boys and girls, were seen taken out of the school in handcuffs. Police were looking for make multiple arrests."

<snip>

"The incident apparently began as a peaceful protest, according to a teacher inside the school, but got out of hand. She said many were upset at the arrest of a male student in class on Thursday.

"They felt as though the way the young man was handled wasn't proper; they felt it was too brutal," said the teacher, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she did not have permission to talk with the press.

The student, she said, was handcuffed in front of his classmates and teacher.

"The children are livid," said the teacher, who was locked in a room with her students about 11:30 a.m. "They felt it wasn't fair or just."

11. I would not want my son to remain until things calmed down.
When I taught, we had a couple of lockdowns and my heart really bled for the worried parents (both lockdowns ended quite peacefully but both involved violence near, but not on, the school grounds).

As a parent, you feel so helpless in a situation like this.

12. I am hoping
that the protest that turned violent did not turn violent because riot police were called.

13. From all indications,
it seems that's exactly how it happened.

The kids learned a lesson of what could happen if they plan to protest authority.

14. I had that same thought. I;ve taught in a lockdown situation
and the police always showed restraint--from the tone of the police and school board spokesmand as well as the children, that does not appear to be the case here.

But that was way back when. It is located in a bad neighborhood.

18. Do you think
the policeman's reaction was because the school is in a bad neighborhood?

19. That's not what I meant at all.
It wasn't a bad neighborhood when I went to school, but I was just pointing out that it is now a ghetto area.
