I have said the exact same thing, although they were trying to kill me at the time. "Guk" is a derivation of the Chinese "guo", which means country. "Hanguk" refers to a Korean. "Miguk" refers to an American. Some GI's, when hearing "miguk" thought that the Vietnamese addressing them were saying "me gook". The ROKs in Vietnam used the word "gook" as a Korean term, much like the American word "guy". I realize that the word has assumed a distinctly pejorative term, but from 1970-71, as a 19 year old grunt, it was the only term I ever heard to describe the Vietnamese on either side. I no longer use the term, and neither does John McCain. Let's just oppose him on the grounds that he's a pandering, war-mongering, dangerous asshole.
