What happened to the "free speech" zones?

I recall they were used frequently before the last election? People that wanted to protest George W Bush were taken several blocks away and put behind a fence, out of sight of the media and the cameras, waving their protest signs at each other. Then, after the election, I don't know that they have ever used these "free speech" zones again? What was your opinion of the "free speech" zones?

Back in 04. Yes, they were light years away from the rightist gathering, as specified/"Free Speech Zone," but happened to be standing on the wrong side of the street {!!!}, and so were hauled off. No shit. 15 yr old girls dressed as fuckin trees...

Occasionally, there will be a shouting match between the two and you can actually make out what each group is saying. Then you figure out that one person is shouting about a "living wage" to a person who is adamant about the rights of salamanders.

One thing that never happens at these shouting festivals is this:

"I'm in favor of it!"
"I'm against it!"
"Well, you SHOULD be in favor of it!"
"Hey, you're right! I changed my mind."
