now Hagee has had the satisfaction of seeing John McCain come as a suppliant for votes at the Washington conference of Christians United for Israel, of which he is the prime mover (along with some more urbane figures, such as David Brog). Reveling in his new-found power and status, Hagee reportedly once again (he's used the line before) exulted that

The Jerusalem Post reports:

Earlier in the day, declared Republican candidate John McCain, an Arizona Senator, made a surprise appearance at the conference. He spoke about what he dubbed perhaps the "greatest evil" that the US and Israel have ever faced - radical Islam.

The senator spoke unequivocally about the need to "confront Iran" to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons...McCain called the current conflict a "vast ideological struggle" against "everything we stand for and believe in," and stressed the need to ensure Israel's safety as the only democracy in the Middle East, questioning that "if we fail in Israel, where will we succeed?"

McCain and Gingrich have been linked to Hagee for some time - a year ago they both appeared on TV to discuss current events as "World War III"; right-wing MK Benny Elon stated that they had got the talking-point from one of Hagee's books.

What Secret "Other Matters" Did McCain Discuss With "Apocalypse Now" Hagee ?

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 09:55:06 AM EST

<snips>

A few weeks ago, to little notice, Texas megachurch pastor John Hagee, founder of the new "apocalypse now!" national lobbying group CUFI ( what is CUFI ? see story footnote ) met with Presidential candidate and US Senator John McCain and, over breakfast, discussed Israel and "other matters."

Pastor John Hagee stated:

"the United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God's plan for both Israel and the West... a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ.".

So, what were the "other matters" Hagee and McCain discussed last January 29th? And, why is Senator McCain seeking political support from an advocate for apocalyptic war?

Pastor Hagee's email to members of CUFI:

CHRISTIANS UNITED FOR ISRAEL

Newsflash!

This morning I had an extended breakfast with Senator John McCain of Arizona. Our topic of discussion was Israel and his candidacy for the Presidency of the United States of America.

Senator McCain's comments concerning Israel are on target! He gets it! While I do not want to put the specifics of our conversation in this update I am glad to report to our leadership and supporters that John McCain is solidly pro-Israel.

We discussed his positions on other matters that I will share with you when I speak with you in person. This newsflash goes to the ends of the earth and I don't want to read it in the media tomorrow.

1. Hagee is a master of irony
the only reason he supports Israel is so that when Armageddon is personally started by his actions, all the Jews who don't immediately convert to Christianity will be killed. The ultimate irony; the world's worst anti-semite posing as a friend of Israel.

2. Exactly
I was about to post the same thing. Judging by Bill Moyers' story about CUFI last October, Hagee is batshit insane--I wonder if many of McCain's supporters know (or even care about) that.

5. Catholics and Jews can both hammer McCain on this one
The Catholic Church is the "Whore of Babylon" and a false religion, according to Hagee.

He just wants the Jewish race exterminated, though. No name-calling.

What a nice man.
