Watch these college kids shut down the street & WALK 7 mi. to polling place.
Here's the story:

Prairie View A&M in Prairie View, Texas is a historically black university that is home to about 8,000 students who heavily skews towards the Democrats. Texas Republicans gerrymandered the crap out their district and then placed the early voting stations seven miles from campus. I don’t know if you remember being carless on campus, but a seven mile trip is tough to swing if the bus doesn’t go there.

So what did the students at Prairie View A&M do?

They walked. They set out in a group of hundreds of students, took over a highway, and walked the seven miles from campus to the polling station.

To hell with the Repubs trying to use voter suppression tactics on them! Good on all of them.

It's so awesome to see on youtube:

3. the university of georgia is broken into four districts
to prevent the university students from having any say in the running of the city of Athens GA...this is nothing new...but the march certainly makes a point.

14. we had meetings back in the 80's to talk it through
but no one was willing to stand up and really fight it. I spoke up at the meetings with the town council...even used the term gerrymandering, to no avail. Tried to organize some stuff, but I guess people were just too comfortable to argue about it.

Oh, well...

9. This is not their first fight!
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 12:56 AM by Lisa0825
A few years back, there was a showdown between Prairie View students and their local officials. The college town would be mighty white if not for the students. The mostly white residents did not like having their votes diluted by the part-time residents and tried to prevent students from being able to vote there. It was pretty big news in Texas.

I really admire them for continuing to do whatever it takes to exercise their rights!

GO TEXANS! :yourock: :patriot:

12. Why oh why am I reminded of the 1960s all of a sudden?
Perhaps my cynical ass will be proven wrong in November, and later on in fact. Hell, I hope I am

By the way, why wasn't this on NATIONAL TV?

This is a national story (or rather part of a huge national story)
